Marithal Empire

The Marithal Empire was an ancient civilization that rose to prominence in the southern part of Orynthia's Marithal Basin, flourishing in the region's fertile marshlands and complex river systems before its eventual collapse. This Empire was known for its formidable naval strength, advanced agricultural systems, and unique cultural developments.   The Marithal Empire was established around the central waterway of the Senthis River and expanded to control a vast area of the Marithal Basin. It thrived for several centuries, developing a sophisticated civilization in the heart of the Basin, while maintaining an intimidating presence across the region due to its naval capabilities. The Empire's capital was a city-state located near the mouth of the Senthis River, where the waterway met the sea.

Culture

The society of the Marithal Empire was rich and complex, marked by advancements in art, architecture, and literature. The people built majestic temples, palaces, and aqueducts, some of which stand as ruins today, offering glimpses into their once thriving civilization. The Empire's culture was strongly influenced by their environment. They developed unique agricultural techniques suitable for the marshlands, cultivating rice, fruits, and medicinal herbs. Their intricate knowledge of herbal medicine remains evident in the practices of the current inhabitants of the Marithal Basin.   The Marithal people were also noted seafarers. They built a formidable navy that allowed them to control trade routes and exert influence over the surrounding waters. This naval prowess also led to confrontations with other powers, notably the Ardetian Islands.

Disbandment

Despite its glory, the Marithal Empire faced numerous challenges that led to its downfall. The Empire threatened the neighbouring Ardetian Islands, leading to the formation of the Ardetian League, which successfully resisted Marithal's advances. These conflicts drained the Empire's resources and weakened its structures.   Simultaneously, the Empire was struck by a series of devastating plagues. These diseases took a severe toll on the population, leading to a loss of manpower that crippled the Empire's ability to maintain its infrastructure and military strength.   In the midst of these crises, the region's climate began to change, causing fluctuations in the water systems that disrupted agriculture and affected food production. The combination of warfare, disease, and environmental changes led to the Empire's decline and eventual collapse.   Today, the Marithal Empire is remembered as a powerful civilization that once dominated the Marithal Basin. Its legacy can be seen in the ruins scattered across the region, testaments to a bygone era of splendour and advancement. Despite its fall, the Empire's influence is still evident in the Basin's culture and practices, offering a window into the vibrant past of this ancient civilization.

Descendants

Today, the Marithal Basin is primarily inhabited by three ethnic groups: the Senji, the Mallith, and the Watari. In addition, there are smaller numbers of hybrid populations resulting from the mixing of these ethnic groups or occasional intermarriages with visiting seafarers.
  • Senji - The Senji people are believed to be the direct descendants of the Marithal Empire, having adapted and survived through the centuries since the Empire's collapse.
  • Watari - The Watari are an enigmatic people who inhabit the forests and highlands of the Marithal Basin. Their origins are shrouded in mystery, but it's commonly whispered that they descended from the mountains into the Marithal Basin around the time of the Empire's collapse.
  • Mallith - The Mallith are coastal dwellers who've managed to carve out a living in the Marithal Basin's challenging environment.
Despite their potential historical link to the Marithal Empire, all the groups hold a certain wariness towards the ancient ruins. Over time, these once-majestic structures have become the backdrop of their daily life - a mysterious echo of a past that feels far removed from their present.
