Haute Granpere

The title of Haute Granpere (or Granmere) is rarely filled, as the Halflings of Dalenshire are not given to great need for an "overlord." The leaders of the various halfling clans vie for this position every ten years at the Boucherie Grande. Six tests, devised by the leaders of the six great clans, are administered to the various clan leaders. Whoever wins earns the title of Haute Granpere for the next ten years. In theory, the Haute Grandpere has the same authority over Dalenshire that the King of Summerlund has over Summerlund. In practice, this authority is more ceremonial. Even at the Conclaves of the Seven Kingdoms, the Haute Grandperes would consult with other clan leaders before making any major decisions for Dalenshire as a whole. Some point to this lack of authority as a contributing factor for the large areas of Dalenshire that were captured by the Orcish Hordes.
