Dragons

Old myths have been circulating The Continent since time immemorial about huge creatures that blot out The Sun before descending upon cities to feast on the livestock and loot the riches. These fearsome creatures are the dragons.
Dragons are large reptilian creatures that hail from Mortoram. They come in various shapes and sizes, but the most common ones possess two wings and two legs. Many of them are known to breath destructive fire. In all the legends about dragons, they are told to be near unkillable forces of chaos, bringing destruction upon the lands that strayed too far from the Order. Their scales are as resistant as shields, their claws are liek spears and their teeth are like swords. No mere mortal ever managed to kill a dragon, but there are various stories of them being injured or incapacitated by mighty warriors.

Whilst they have not been seen on The Continent for centuries, tales about them paint a particular image in regards to their behaviour. Dragons are greedy by nature and use their power to get what they want. Their desires usually revolve around food and gold. Every story featuring a dragon mentions them attacking a settlement to take their gold or livestock. Once they are satiated, dragons cowardly retreat to their lair and sleep for years on their spoils. Many stories mention heroes finding a sleeping dragon in their lair, only for it to awaken and face the challenger, before being driven off. Once they are forced to retreat, dragons gobble up their gold and fly to the West, leading to the assumption that they come from Mortoram.

Dragons in Atoras Belief

In the lands of Westatoras and Ostatoras, there is a legend that is unique to the area. Eorgios Atoras, the founder of the Twin Empires, is said to be the only mortal man who actually managed to slay a dragon. Leading a party of heroic warriors, Eorgios tracked down a dragon, entered its lair and fougt the creature. The entire party was killed in the fighting except for Atoras, who returned with the dragon's hoard, making him the richest noble in all the land and allowing him to start his journey on creating his empire.

Dragons in Scovonian Belief

Many fables describing fights against dragons arose from the lands of Scovony. According to some tales, at a certain point in history, facing a dragon was part of a coming to age ritual. Scholars believe that the reason for this is that Scovonian people didn't actually encounter dragons, but similar creatures and mistook them for the fearsome creatures.

Dragons in High Elven Belief

Given their proximity to their supposed origin in Mortoram, the people of Elluin have a vastly different set of stories about dragons. Whilst their home is still considered to be in Mortoram, elves regard dragons as wise leaders of the wild animals in the landmass. According to tales told by elven merchants, some dragons even sold gold taken from humans to them.
