Kraken

The Kraken is a massive sea creature that lives in the Frozen Waves and Elven Seas. There are various tales and legends about this sea monster, mostly from Scovonian sailors and according to these tales, the Kraken is an oversized octopus or squid-like creature.   The Kraken is said to have an excessive amount of tentacles with some estimates putting their number in the hundreds. Its body is large and elongated and it is known to be able to camouflage itself by changing its color and texture similarly to octopi. Amongst the tentacles, sits a large beaked mouth, also reminiscent of a regular octopus.   Some tales also tell about a larger torso, meaning that the large octopus-like creature may only be the head of an even more gigantic creature. This aspect is not universal to all stories however, so it can't be confirmed.   Scovonian and some Elven tales speak about attacks made by the creature. It usually disguises itself as a wave or a small, rocky island and waits for an unfortunate ship to sail close. Then dozens of tentacles suddenly sprout from the water and begin to drag the ship beneath the waves. During the attack, smaller tentacles also grab the crew aboard the ship and take them directly into the water where they are eaten by the creature. An attack by the Kraken seldom leaves survivors, but other vessels in the vicinity can bear witness to the events and tell about it later.

Kraken in Scovonian Belief

According to the Old Faith followed by many Scovonian people, the Kraken is an immortal, celestial beast created by the gods to feast an grow. When the end times come, Thinatr will fight and kill the beast to offer its flesh as food for those in the afterlife that would feed them for eternity. When a sailor is killed by the Kraken, they go to the afterlife as a reward for their sacrifice.

Kraken in Order Belief

The Church of Order views the Kraken as an abomination, no more than a monstrous entity created by Kaos to bring unwanted destruction and death to the good people of The Continent.

Kraken in Elven Belief

The High Elves place less significance on this giant monster than humans do, but they have developed quite a few theories about the creature. Elven folklore states that the creature was created by Volublectyth to protect Elluin from threats. Those that die to the beast would have brought harm to their empire and thus deserve no respect.
The sea was calm and the sky was clear, or so I thought. We were sailing through the Frozen Waves, one of the most treacherous seas in the land of Scovonia. As we were making our way towards our destination, I heard a strange sound, something I had never heard before. Suddenly, the water around us started to bubble and churn, and before we knew it, we were attacked by the Kraken. The tentacles rose from the water, wrapping around the ship and dragging it down into the depths. I fought to stay afloat, desperately swimming towards the surface as the ship was dragged deeper and deeper.     The crew screamed and shouted as they were pulled under, their cries echoing through the water. I saw the Kraken's beaked mouth and dozens of writhing tentacles, thrashing around as it devoured my fellow sailors.     But somehow, I managed to break free from the creature's grasp and swim towards the nearest floating wreckage. I clung to it for dear life, watching in horror as the Kraken consumed everything in its path.     Days passed before I was rescued by a passing ship. I told them of the Kraken, of its terrible power and the fate of my fellow crew members. They looked at me with a mixture of disbelief and horror, but I knew what I had seen.   From that day forward, I was never the same. I could never sail again, the memory of the Kraken haunting me every time I closed my eyes. But I knew one thing for sure, the tales of the Kraken were true and that monster was still out there, waiting to claim its next victims.
