Alteron Protectorate
The Alteron Protectorate is a nation located on the west coast of Söe, its rule spans about 800 Leguen along the coast of the Peaceful Sea and reaching as far as a good 600 inland. The foothills of Devil Horns being part of the inland border. The Protectorate is a seafaring nation of traders and explorers.
They founded quite some settlements and colonies not only on Söe but on Alver and Mitarin as well.
Structure
At its core, the Protectorate is a semi-feudal semi-plutocratic nation under the rule of a Kikya a title best translated to King or Queen. The current ruler is queen Ytira Mahion and she has been serving in this capacity for the last 78 years quite successfully.
Ranking right below the Kikya are a number of Kya, who are comparable to a Duke or an Earl. The next level of the nobility is the Prevaria and finally, the basic rank of Alteron nobility is the Dyn.
The nobility is tasked with "keeping the Kikya's lands", this spans from cultivation to preservation and includes the fostering of people as well.
The Protectorate also uses a number of "Honourable Trader Houses" to govern their realm.
A trader house is not a family per se but individuals tend to stay in a house, once they are part of it and they tend to keep their families within the same house, especially as house loyalty is enforced fairly forcefully.
The HTHs have a ranking between themselves, with the higher ranks granting promotions or the peer ranks demoting houses.
The ranks in ascending order:
- honourable trader house - could be a craftsman or a family owning a small merchant ship.
- notable trader house - a group of craftsmen, shipowners or a mercenary unit of some reputation.
- distinguished trader house - a house that is well known and has begun to accumulate influence and wealth.
- situated trader house - a house with much and continuous success that has thus accumulated significant wealth and influence.
- bounteous trader house - a house with abundant riches in money, power and tradition.
- ancient trader house - a house with abundant riches and a long history of holding the title of "bounteous trader house".
Assets
Currently the wealth and power of the Protectorate do rest on three pillars, agricultural production is the primary one. The protectorate is blessed with its location between the shores of The Peaceful Sea and the mountain range of the Devil Horns resulting from that the climate is very favourable to any form of agriculture. With summers and winters both mild and humid the crops are fruitful around the year. The twin volcanos of the Devil Horns do have a tendency to spew ash every few decades and thus replenish the soil of the Protectorate and the Kento-Plains.
The second pillar of its power is trade. With a massive surplus of agricultural production, the Protectorate has, for centuries been able to export vast amounts of grain, vine, livestock and other foodstuffs. The only thing that was needed to secure this trade was securing the shipping- and caravan routes and thus the protectorate is forced to maintain a small standing navy and army.
As an inevitable consequence this brings us to the third pillar of the Protectorate's high standing with other nations and the welfare of Its people. The high standard of education provided by the Honourable Trader Houses, the many schools that provide service at a very affordable price and not at last by Institutes of higher education, foremost of those is currently the Institutio et Academia Scientifica but it does not stand alone.
So heared by mouth of Protecotrate's Honorable Ambasedor to the Hojan Confederation.
