Tartarus

The realm of Tartarus is the demesne of the death goddess Meverab, whom sits chained to her Lower Throne. The Golling flows here, carrying with it the souls of the dead, which are guided both by their soul chains and psychopomps to this place and then abandoned to the ministrations of the slaughterers. Living beings who cross the thresholds into Tartarus forfeit their right to live and are treated as any dead soul, as this is a place ruled by the Principle of Death.   A grim place that is a purgatory for souls who are judged and cleansed of their sins and memories if judged unworthy (and most indeed are unworthy) of either reward in Heaven or punishment by Hell. Indeed, angels and devils from both come to play advocate for petitioners, arguing for the virtue of the soul, though Meverab is rarely moved by such pleas, instead relying upon the judgment of their scales. Since alignment is a objective force in Uskara, this has some weight.   Those who are unworthy join the Shuffling Masses of souls who stand in the dark, gaining only glimpses of the light below filtering down the pit of Abaddon. There's no magical river of forgetfulness in Tartarus. Cleansing comes only with waiting and many years, and the madness of a soul shackled and bound to remain silent and deaf, a form of solitary confinement that yet also has them stand with thousands of other souls. There's a magic involved here, of course, but it is a cruel one.   By contrast, Meverab's palace of jade is a resplendent and remarkable edifice, built by the hecatocheires, the titans who followed her after being cast down and have been twisted by their proximity to the Pit. Despite this, there is little ability to enjoy it, as the Undergod is a prisoner in her own palace, and forced to protect the Cthonic Gates that separate the Terrestrial Sphere from the Outer Depths. On the other end of those brass-and-lead slabs, through the cracks of which flows the waters of the Golling, is the Nine Hells, specifically Avernus.
