Cajal Valley

A fertile river valley in the Vulture's Nest Mountains of Audoya.

Geography

Everything along the Worriall River between the town of Rere and the abandoned holy city of Sogalaga, 62 miles away, is thought to be included in the valley, which runs mainly south to north. The Hallowed Valley has heights above sea level ranging from 9,800 feet at Rere to 6,730 feet below the fortress of Sogalaga at the Worriall River. The mountains rise to much higher levels on both sides of the river, notably to the east, where two conspicuous mountains, Grim Height (19,088 feet) and Burning Mount (19,334 feet), overlook the valley. On average, the densely cultivated valley floor is about two-thirds of a mile wide. Side valleys and agricultural terraces increase the amount of land that can be cultivated.   The Worriall River carved up the valley. It is supplied by a number of rivers that flow through neighboring valleys and gorges, and it is home to a number of communities. In Atron's heartland, the Hallowed Valley is the most important place for maize production, and access to tropical areas through the valley promotes the import of products like coca leaf and chile peppers to Cajal.   Cajal's climate is typical of the valley. Monthly average temperatures range from 60 °F in Senu, the warmest month, to 54 °F in Likush, the coldest month. Annual precipitation totals 20.7 inches, concentrated in the months of Masus through Mimue, and monthly average temperatures range from 60 °F in Senu, the warmest month, to 54 °F in Likush, the coldest month.

History

The Cajal area was home to the early Atronine. During the period 687 to 922, the Atronine gained administrative control over the numerous species and ethnicities residing in or near the Hallowed Valley, either by conquest or diplomacy.   The Atronine were drawn to the Hallowed Valley because it is lower in elevation and so warmer than any other neighboring place (in addition to its proximity to Cajal). Maize may be grown in the Hallowed Valley due to its lower elevation. Maize is a prestige crop for the Atronine, particularly for making Western Rumble, a fermented maize drink consumed in huge quantities by the Atronine and their subjects at their many ceremonial feasts.   Western Rumble has a long and illustrious history. During battle, the Atronine will decapitate their opponents' heads and use them as a drinking vessel for Western Rumble. The victorious transfer from the chaos of conflict to the order of Atron is symbolized by this ritual of sipping Western Rumble from a foe's head.   Maize cultivars produced in adjacent Botojana, an Atronine seedling nursery, aid large-scale maize production in the Hallowed Valley.   Conquered regions are usually divided into three roughly equal halves by the Atronine. One half is for the Exarca Atron, another for the ecclesiastical establishment, and the third for the farming communities themselves. The Hallowed Valley became a royal estate and country home area around a century ago. After an Exarca Atron  constructs a royal estate, their descendants continue to own it after they die. Yoliyamanitzin's estate was one of the reasons for the construction of Sogalaga.   Agricultural terraces are erected up the sides of hillsides flanking the valley floor, and they are the most prominent and pervasive signs of Atronine civilization in the Hallowed Valley, giving the valley its unique texture.
