The Emergence of the Unnatural
The aftermath of The Wars of Divinity, the temples and churches on Valine reorganized, split over doctrine and minutiae that only mortals fixate upon. However, in the sphere of the divine, the pantheon struggled with their own adaptations in the face of the first power shift since The Divine Schism some eighty years prior, fueled by the effect of the upheaval of mortal belief on the divine realm.
In the year 169, disheartened by the apparent disinterest that Gama and Eruer were showing about Valine, two other gods, Astus and Jopha the Verdant hatched a plan to combine their divine essence and their portfolios encompassing the cycle of life and death to create the perfect divine being. Their intent was not to overthrow the Indomitable Empress and her Cosmic Consort, but rather to bring into being one god whose focus would be solely on the world of Valine and its inhabitants. In a manner of speaking, their hubristic plan succeeded, but rather than the perfect divine being, they instead created what many have come to see as a blight on the world - Khydar the Unnatural. The newly created God of Undeath was divine, no doubt, and his powers rank among the highest, even amongst the gods, but rather than a new god to focus on Valine's living populace and the world's well being, the twisted creation of the Deities of Death and Nature filled a void that Gama had deliberately left in place, never intending that the dead should rise on her new creation.
Now, however, the emergence of Khydar into the pantheon unleashed exactly that. Beginning with simply rising corpses, Khydar the Unnatural waged a two decade long invasion of Valine, to build up his own force against his father, Astus, his rival for the souls of the dead. The Undead Terror that followed Khydar's creation changed life on Valine forever.
