The Mason and Wind
Mofir, 18th of Destus
General Summary
Leaving the library, the party paused to check with some of the Varendicci citizens now living in Harmony Brook due to the previous year's wild magic burst giving them gills. From a now-aquatic minotaur and half-elf, they learned that, from the vantage point of the river, a small primate that may have been a chimp was observed in the Sufnia Plaza and the rooftops of the surrounding buildings, including the library. Notably, it wore a blue vest and yellow pants.
Asking around, they discovered that the group from the festival that had the animal and monster show were staying at an inn called the The Mason and Wind, knowing that a bard performing nearby had a chimp that performed with him, they headed over to the eastern portion of town to see what they could find out at the inn.
Howl continued to follow the party, hoping they would soon lead him to the weapons that he sought, not quite understanding that the group had not yet finished their task and the party continued to be happy to have their new companion along, particularly as his knowledge of chimps was a benefit to their investigation.
At the The Mason and Wind, Stripling bought a couple of drinks from Wyssira Di Girolamo, the owner of the establishment, to butter up a couple of off-duty guards at one of the tables in case they needed some assistance. Howl took the lead in a conversation with a couple of the festival workers, a halfling fortune teller named Gomatrudis Frattaroli and an elderly human "magician", Dacio Solimine, who was able to give them more information on the bard that they were searching for - a caniic called Heimori.
Dacio also expounded on the legends behind one of the creatures that they displayed in their act, called a peryton, and produced a token from behind Howl's ear, using sleight of hand - amazing Howl who had never come across the trick before. Dacio informed the group that if they gave the token to the half-orc in the stables, he would show them their collection of beasts, since the party had missed the festival.
In the stables, the party could see, tending to their beasts, a half-orc, a buff-looking felian, and an odd-looking individual (much like a halfling, but with green-blue skin) that none of the group could quite place. Howl recognized it as some sort of cross-species individual, rare but not unheard of on Valine. The festival crew's half-orc leader, Vulpiano Maletta was somewhat taken aback when Howl attempted to stick the token into his ear, but weathered the misunderstanding, introducing them to their beastmaster, a slight but peppy human woman named Editta Dondero, who showed off their menagerie of beasts, including the peryton, a babytriceratops, an owlbear, three giant geese, and a collection of all four types of elemental kept in individual chests (among many more). The group noticed that the creatures seemed nervous, and Editta explained that they were used to being on display in large open areas like the festival, but not in enclosed spaces like this, and she though the party's presence might be spooking them a little.
There was a sudden crash as the baby triceratops apparently broke out of its cage, sending Editta and Vulpiano running to corral the beast, but at the same moment, Throom and Stripling caught a flash of movement out of the corner of their eye, and Howl noticed that the door to another cage was open and a rock-like creature was edging towards the open door. Turning to see what the movement had been, the party saw the peryton bursting from its cage and immediately saw a small, tailed primate in a vest and pants as it picked the lock of one of the chests, releasing an earth elemental. Chaos reigned in the stables as the baby triceratops burst into the streets of Varendicci, the peryton advanced, menacingly, on the party, the roper edged out of its cage's open door and the earth elemental made the ground beneath their feet begin to shake.
Aelar, who had been looking at the owlbear was the last to notice anything going on, but finally became aware that there was a problem.
