Essend Main

Demographics

Essend is an incredibly poor district, with a diverse population. Many of the people live in tenement slums, due to the rapid crumbing of the outer limits. A large number of unapproved immigrants live in this district, despite the Britannia Primus et Solus Act.

Government

The government of Victoriam technically runs the district, however Essend is informally run by the Sterling Family. Residents pay for goods with information on the HighCircle and Wessend families, and uses that information for blackmail.

Industry & Trade

Inhabitants have little means of making a living. Some can afford to cross to other districts to work as hired help, or as community labor, but their are no exports or manufacturing.

Infrastructure

There is a small bridge, owned by the Glorian Family, that requires tolls to cross. Many Essies are unable to pay, and rely on the Sterlings for survival by smuggling unauthorized goods across the Glorian bridge

Assets

None. In Essend, goods are bought with information or loyalty.

Guilds and Factions

The Sterling smuggling family acts as the only faction. They have some influence over the Governor, and have long lobbied to get aid for Essend District, to no avail.

History

Once, Essend was a thriving district, with a large population, a booming factory district, and a vibrant culture due to the immigrant population. In 1866. the divide between the factory are and residential spaces began to crumble, with it completely falling apart in 1867. The district still prospered, as there were way to access the rest of the city, but in 1870, the Sussee Bridge pipeline had a rupture, and destroyed the entire bridge. there was no way to get food or manufactured goods, unless the resident could pay to cross the Glorian family's private bridge. The Sterling family took over control, blackmailing the governor and other families so their people could cross the bridge. Sterling operatives act as a veritable gang of robin hoods, often stealing from HighCircle or Wessend families to bring goods back to Essend.

Architecture

Most of this area is residential, however it is mainly comprised of tenement housing, and the rapid deterioration of the edges forces more and more people to live in smaller and smaller places. Young children often decorate the walls with bright paints when they are available.
