Oronaga

The Anacondas

An Oronaga temple scout.
The most powerful of the Lowland clans to the West, the Oronaga are a civilization in their own right, the result of a shaky cultural partnership between the Meranthic humans and drow of the Emerald Expanse. Their Chief Kannushi, Oronaga Sachiko, is a drow Matriarch that seeks to balance the benefits of Commonwealth partnership without compromising on traditional drow culture. It is a difficult job.

The Oronaga, before they were a clan of the Commonwealth, were a great civilization in their own right, the result of a gradual and still-shaky cooperation between the Meranthic humans of Ancient Iyō and subterranean colonies of Rozsan drow.

Once reclusive and anti-social, the drow grew to appreciate the hunger the surrounding Iyōan humans had for their vast stores of subterranean herbs, spices and minerals. (The human clans, in turn, decided the drow's cavernous underground cities were too defensible to obtain this wealth for free.) The result is one of the most opulent civilizations on Materia: impressive Oronaga palaces can be found scattered about the muggy swampland and rainforests of far western Marai, known as the Emerald Expanse.

Shrewd and ruthless, the Oronaga rule their citizens and vassal clans with a watchful eye, carefully monitoring and taxing their abundant trade routes with Marai and Khayyam alike. That this wealth is now a part of the Commonwealth means the strangenesses of the Oronaga, particularly their aloofness to the Eight-Fold Path, go largely tolerated.

Oronaga Sachiko

Drow traditionalists complain the society has lost its way, too enamoured with the vibrancy and excitement of the Commonwealth, and for the most part they’re not wrong; much of the current drow populace would have little interest in going back to simpler, starker times. Chief Kannushi Oronaga Sachiko, a drow herself, plays a middle ground: she is female (a snub to patriarchal bushidō and a nod to traditional, matriarchal drow society) but carries a Maraian name and is (more or less) cooperative with Commonwealth affairs. The drow are still light-sensitive and prefer the shady jungles of their territory, and when their merchants or politicians are seen in the Heartlands they tend to wear veiled hats or shaded goggles, adding to their mystery.

Oronaga Tsaoryu

While she juggles both Commonwealth, regional and drow affairs in her opulent emerald palace, Sachiko's chief Maraian representative resides permanently in the Empyreal City, heart of the Commonwealth. His name is Oronaga Tsaoryu (banner image, left). Despite being a human, Tsaoryu (often affectionately called Tsao-Tsao, which he receives with good humour) is a cleric and warlock of Nyxfall: the third, night aspect of Ahm typically associated with memory, secrecy and knowledge. He is an eccentric and jovial figure, fond of comedy and famous for his one-liners, but is also known to be a ruthlessly intelligent, Machiavellian agent for Anaconda affairs. He makes no attempt to hide this, and it just happy everyone is on the same page.
