Deeper into the Crevasse
General Summary
After taking a brief rest, the Party ventured onward, turning into the first room they found. At the far end of the room, they saw two bizarre, downright alien creatures that appeared to be gnawing on something. The creatures were aggressive and initiated a fight, and while the Party was distracted by them, a large ooze crept through the ceiling and attacked. It looked like a black pudding infused with the Void itself, and its maddening form struck at our heroes' minds. It split into smaller parts when Axelrod attacked it with his sword, and it briefly knocked Bartimus unconscious with eldritch psuedopods. Lyza and Emmalyn found that radiant damage was effective, and the Party was eventually victorious.
The weirdest moment of the battle occurred when the surroundings appeared to flash to a different time when the place wasn't wrecked. This phenomenon wouldn't go away soon; the next place the Party found was a massive ceremonial room that also looked destroyed, but flashing before their eyes was the appearance of the room in pristine condition. They also saw two figures appear in the room that weren't there in the Party's current time. When things flashed back to the present, the saw a large creature that looked like an elemental caught in and out of time. It hit hard and jumped around, but it eventually fell.
Once Hobart realized the exit was a stairway leading to his new void-shaped best friend, the Party backtracked to the first fork they found on this level. It took them to another destroyed room caught in a time anomaly. When it flashed to a cleaner time, they saw a large magical pillar in middle of the room, surrounded by spellcasters performing some type of ritual. When it returned to their time, the spellcasters were replaced by what could be generally called inside-out people. Barty got to flex his fireball muscles for the first time, which was fun.
With nowhere else to explore, the group took the final stairs to the lowest level. The darkness was so powerful that their normal lights and vision were restricted. The group moved into the summoning chamber, and everyone had the chance to talk to the Void. It was very cryptic in its answers, implying that the speaker was once the most powerful prisoner on the upper levels. He said they were trying to resurrect their lord Quoros, but they didn't realize he wasn't dead. He said the current cult were fools and would unwittingly complete his work.
Hobart, still shaken from his first encounter, got a bit aggressive in the conversation, and the void responded by dumping out aberration after aberration. The facility started to shake more and more, and the Party had to dodge falling ceiling blocks. Barty eventually broke the circle constraining the void, and it began to move around the room. As a last resort, they destroyed one of the parts of the summoning gate, and their enemies vanished with a blast of psychic energy. An old passage was revealed behind a collapsed wall, and the Party fled the lair. When they emerged outdoors, they noticed the temperature was noticeably cooler than when they first went below ground.
What larger threat had they uncovered below Lake Thane? How long were they actually gone? Find out next time...
