Magic University of Mystryl

The Magic University of Mystryl is the largest single institution for the teaching of magic in all of Winderia. The other city-states host individual schools for each separate arcane tradition, and the school corresponding to that city's wellspring is always housed in the great spire and receives the most attention. Some of the larger towns host elementary magic schools to help high-potential children learn basic control of their abilities. But the Magic University of Mystryl is the only institution to provide high-level magical education in every arcane tradition, with resources invested in the eight schools equally. Each separate college rivals the quality of the specialized schools in each city-state. In fact, the school became so prominent that—much like a gelatinous cube—it enveloped the standard university in the city. Some consider this a blessing, as its resources are so great that the non-magic education provided to any and all students rose to the same quality. A visitor walking down a university hallway could overhear an applied lesson on casting magic missile, a lecture on the life cycle of dragons, a seminar on open-plain military tactics, and a panel discussion on inter-city-state relations.   Students' education is primarily self-directed study. Courses are regularly available on a variety of subjects, but attendance is not required. Examinations are pass/fail and administered only to students wishing to move on to higher-level studies on a subject. This allows students to attend to other life affairs and decide how much they wish to invest in their educations. As long as there is adequate remuneration (room and board is extra!), students take from the university as much as they'd like.   The most impressive building on campus is the four-story Great Library. The first floor is open to the public and contains books and scrolls on every subject, including some low-level magical texts. Access to the second and third floors is restricted to students of increasing skill and individuals of increasing importance to the Confederation Arcanum. Only a select few know what is on the fourth floor, and even fewer have seen it.   Early in their adventures together, the Party defeated a murderer in the Great Library and prevented it from burning. Combined with their defense of Fort Calber, this act was rewarded with second-floor access to the library, and Axelrod and Hobart accepted offers of enrollment in the university. Bartimus Codswallop met a University professor who used the second-floor resources to undo his goblin curse.   After clearing a section of the Mystryl sewers of kobolds, the Party found a red dragon egg. They donated it to the University's dragon studies department for safekeeping and study.
