Personal history
Ophelia Cruz was born the daughter of a Wizard Demonologist, in the city of Brugand.
Her mother died in childbirth, leaving her to be raised by a nanny hired by her father. For many years, Ophelia saw very little of her father as he was often locked away in the city’s magic college, or off on study trips in other cities. Ophelia’s father took more of an interest in his daughter when she turned five years of age.
She was enrolled in the city's Magic college, a privilege only offered to children of her age, from having a parent with a high standing within the college.
In her first true examination, at the age of seven, she succeeded only in injuring herself after failing to draw the correct runes of protection against the minor imp she was to summon.
With a bloody slash from the imp’s claws across her chest, Ophelia’s father insisted that no magic was used to heal her wound, so it would scar, and remind her to try harder in the future.
Much to her father's disappointment, Ophelia failed to improve her magical abilities, resulting in her expulsion from the college.
With his daughter expelled, Ophelia's father's reputation within the college took a heavy blow. Rumors started to surface that he had cursed his family by breaking a pact with a demon he had summoned to the mortal plane.
Her father, drunk and enraged by the circulating rumors, found her at home one afternoon. After yelling abuse at his daughter for ruining his standing within the college, he struck her with a bolt of magical energy, leaving Ophelia with burns across her body, and leaving her unconscious.
When she awoke, she found she was being cared for at the Infirmary within the city’s grand abbey. The kind, old Abbot told her that her wounds had been treated as best they could, but most likely would leave her with permanent scars. He told her as well, her father had been killed after attacking two other wizards.
While Ophelia was shocked at what had occurred, she shed no tears over her father’s death.
It was soon discovered, her father had tremendous debt from purchasing several texts on summoner magic, and arcane artifacts for use in his studies. As a result, Ophelia inherited no money, and the family house was sold off. With no one to look after her, and no home to live in, The Abbot, who had helped to heal her, took her in at the Abbey.
Over the years, Ophelia learned the faith, followed by the monks at the Abbey, the order of the Stalwart guardian. Their prayers protected people from demonic magics, used by many summoner Wizards like Ophelia’s father.
Along with the prayers and how to protect people, Ophelia learned about the demon planes. As she had learned from her time at the Magic college, there were all types of Demons; those that were neutral to people, and those who were only capable of evil.
It was the evil ones the prayers of the Order could not always defeat.
At sixteen years of age, a messenger from the magic college appeared at the Abbey seeking Ophelia.
Her father's study at the college had been locked by powerful spells, which her father had conjured before his death. The college had only recently broken through these locks and entered the closed off study. Inside, they discovered three summoning circles. Two of which held enraged Demons, trapped in the mortal world all these years. The third was broken and empty. Following an investigation, it was found her father had been possessed by the escaped demon. In return for releasing the other two demons back to their realms, the Wizards at the college had interrogated them, finding out Ophelia’s father had been possessed long before her birth.
Ophelia was deeply saddened to learn this. Knowing she had never truly known her father, and the anger she had felt toward him was for reasons beyond his own control, Ophelia vowed to dedicate her life to fighting demons, so that others would not have to endure what she, or her father had gone through, thanks to demons.
The protection of the Order’s prayers would not be enough to defeat all demons, so Ophelia set out on her own,
Seeking a far off temple, home to a group of warriors, the Order of the Iron-flame, dedicated to battling forces of the occult.
By the age of twenty-three, Ophelia had completed her training with the Iron-flame, having learned multiple forms of combat and archery, and learning thousands of forbidden demons and their names, that would allow her to banish the most vile Hellspawn.
For four years she travelled the continent, offering her services to those in need. Demons fell to her axe blade, anointed in holy oils, and were banished by her whispered words. Even wizards who dabbled in the art of Demonology found a crossbow bolt through their heart, or their head removed with the swing of an axe. Ophelia’s reputation preceded her at times. When she returned to visit the Monks who had looked after her, she found the Wizard’s college was now off limits, for they feared she would attempt to kill some of the summoners.
Eventually, she came to the port city of Sigsport, where the dockside was bustling with stevedores and deckhands worked tirelessly to load and outfit ships preparing to sail for the fabled Ghost archipelago which had appeared in the last few years.
Hearing stories of the mythical islands, Ophelia had no doubt the islands hid ancient evils, only she could banish. Finding a place onboard one ship, she found herself on her way to the Ghosts.
The voyage took little over two months, but they eventually arrived at a makeshift port on the outskirts of the islands. It was there she found a Heritor looking for new arrivals to join her crew. Ophelia shook hands with the fiery-haired Heritor, and took her first payment of gold crowns before stepping onto the deck of the ‘Tempest’.
