Personal history
Born in the Mangau town of Hurdish, Mladic was raised by his mother and father.
His father was the town priest, and desired for Mladic to follow in his footsteps, to guide the towns folk on the path their gods had set before them.
Mladic loved his father, and always accompanied him through his daily tasks.
One of those tasks, was tending to the newly dead, preparing them for burial, and tending the cemetery, blessing it, and keeping the dead at peace.
It was the time spent with the Dead that fascinated Mladic the most, and it was during the preparation of a recently deceased stranger to the town, that Mladic had his first experience with the plane of spirits.
Mladic's father had left the room to prepare herbs for the cleansing of the body. When he returned, he found the young Mladic conversing with the deceased man. Although He heard no words, Mladic's father was astounded that his son had learned the man's name, and where he was from. The stranger told Mladic, he had been coming through Hurdish on his way to the capital of Murgaan, with a message for the Council of Mages at the Murgaan Magic college.
Immediately, Mladic's father urged his son to complete the man's errand, least his spirit be bound to the earth for eternity, forever trying to complete his task.
When Mladic, a young twelve-yearold, arrived before the Council of Mages, many were furious that so young a child from outside the college had disturbed them.
Their anger at Mladic vanished as he relayed the deceased man's message. A spy from a rival college was among the ranks of the College's senior wizards. With this knowledge, the Council were able to find and execute the spy, protecting centuries of work, rival schools could only dream of achieving.
The Council decided that Mladic must remain at the college as a student, for only those who had a natural talent for magic could possibly have communicated with the deceased messenger.
It was many years before Mladic returned home to his Mother and Father.
Overjoyed at their son's return, Mladic's parents were eager to hear of the Magic college, and what Mladic had been learning.
Mladic told them of how he had explored the Plane of Spirits, and learned to speak to the souls who lived there. He took his Father to the town cemetery, and spoke for all the dead within the graves. They were thankful for the delicate care his Father provided them, and the peace they found with the blessings.
Hearing of Mladic's return, the town's folk crowded round, demanding to talk to their loved.
For many, it brought great peace, and for Mladic, it brought happiness, allowing people to say their goodbyes and know they were heard.
Mladic learned more in the following years than just speaking with the dead. he learned that a corpse could be brought back to life, in a way where the soul was unharmed, and in some cases, the soul was even allowed to almost have a free will of it's own with it's old body.
Mladic's first attempt brought him great sadness, for he did the spell wrong, and caused the soul too much pain.
He learned then that he had to seek out the right souls to use, and only those willing would allow the best results.
In Mladic's thirtieth year, a wizard from the college returned from an expedition in the deep south, bringing back an ancient grimoire of Necromantic magic.
The head teachers of Necromantic law disappeared for several weeks, locking themselves away in the college catacombs to study the ancient book.
Rumors quickly began to spread through the halls of the college that the Necromancers were preparing a full take over of the college.
The other Magic schools within the college banded together and prepared to throw the Necromancers out. A brief battle ensued as the head teachers emerged from the catacombs, resulting in the deaths of many students and teachers from different schools.
In the end, the Necromancers were all forced to leave and go into hiding.
Following the battle, the belief the Necromancers had attempted to take over the school, and planned to take over the kingdom, had spread across the country. Mladic attempted to return home, but his parents, no old and grey, had heard of the battle at the college, and believed the necromancers were evil, as was their son. Fearing for their souls, they forced him from home, his father cursing his name as he fled.
A year latter, Mladic, travelling the kingdom as a hedge wizard, came across the smoldering ruins of a temple. butchered bodies lay all around the outside of the temple, and inside were piles of charred corpses.
A single, living person, a young priestess knelt just outside the temple, weeping.
Mladic approached and asked what had happened, the young priestess could not say, for she had been returning from a pilgrimage when she saw the smoke on the horizon.
Mladic then realised that all the spirits of those killed around, and within the temple were still lingering around the burnt ruins.
After speaking with the spirits through the use of Necromantic magic, Mladic discovered that a group of mercenaries, currently in the employ of a rival cult, had attacked, and butchered the priests and priestesses at this temple of Zahru.
The spirits were angry for the way in which they were slaughtered, but they were grateful that the young priestess, Isla, had survived the slaughter, for she was all that remained of their cult.
He also learned that some members of the cult of Zahru had been trained in Necromantic magic and witchcraft.
Isla was yet to learn these arts herself, and without them, she would be unable to perform the rituals of Zahru.
Giving the spirits peace in the knowledge their cult would survive through Isla, Mladic vowed to take her on as an apprentice, and teach her the magic he knew, so Zahru could live on in the mortal realms, and not be consigned to what ever realm forgotten gods resided.
At first, Isla was a slow learner, struggling with basic incantations and gestures, but as the years passed, she began to learn and improve faster and faster, even in some cases, she seemed to pass Mladic's own abilities.
Mladic and Isla arrived, one day, at a town on the edges of a vast graveyard. The townsfolk were worried, saying an old Necromancer had moved in to one of the crypts. The description of the necromancer intrigued Mladic, and at the request of the townsfolk, he went to investigate the graveyard.
It was a long day of searching the vast graveyard until Mladic found the crypt the Necromancer had made as his home.
Several zombies guarded the outside of the crypt and its first chamber, none of which made any attempt to attack Mladic or Isla as they made their way to the very inner chamber of the crypt.
inside the innermost chamber, Mladic encounter a familiar figure.
His old teacher, Sergei, from the Magic college greeted him warmly, and cheerfully chatted with Mladic, finding out what his former pupil had been doing in the years that had passed.
When Mladic introduced his apprentice, His former teacher was speechless.
Moving as fast as his old body would allow, Sergei crossed the room to a stack of ancient parchments. He through them, quickly, before finding what he was looking for.
He said, handing Mladic the Parchment, that an ancient group of worshipers of Life existed in the city of Felstad during it's golden years before it's collapse. This cult also worshiped the twin gods Zahru and Magu. These ancient worshipers were skilled in Necromantic arts, using the teachings of life from Zahru, and the teachings of spirits from Magu, to create a bridge between the mortal realm and the plane of spirits; in essence, creating a form of immortality.
If someone were able to find the ancient temple of these gods, then they may be able to uncover the lost secrets the worshipers once possessed.
Mladic believed his encounter with the young Priestess, and then his old teacher, with the knowledge of the temple within ancient Felstad were more than coincidence. He felt something inside himself, pulling him toward the frozen north. He couldn't say what it was yet, but he knew he could only know by exploring the frozen remains of Frsotgrave.
