Blood was a bodily fluid that many species had. It provided a way for the body to transport oxygen, nutrients, waste and other things vital to survival over the body. The color of blood varied between species. Most species, including Humans, Chiss, Zabraks, and Aqualish, had red blood. Duros, Falleen, Rodians, and Trandoshans had green blood, T'surr, Rattataki and Talz had blue blood, Geonosians had yellow blood, Judd's species, Devaronians, Aleena, Massassi[1] and Yuuzhan Vong had black blood.
According to Han Solo, the taste of blood was roughly equivalent to the taste of liquid tin.[2] A blood transfusion from a Force-sensitive to a non-Force sensitive would not grant the latter a connection to the Force.[3] In 3645 BBY, Sith Lord and alchemist Darth Scabrous used a backpack-mounted intravenous device to transplant uncontaminated blood when he was infected by a zombie-creating virus known as "the Sickness". This slowed the rate of transformation, allowing him to survive much longer than others who were infected.[4]
Behind the scenes
Blood is occasionally visible in the Star Wars films. In Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn has blood stains on his shirt when he is stabbed by Darth Maul and a brief splatter of atomized blood can be seen when Obi-Wan Kenobi cleaves Darth Maul. In Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, Obi-Wan has blood on him after Dooku cuts his arms and legs, though these may be burns since lightsabers tend to cauterize flesh. In Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, blood can be seen inside the canisters of the medical droid when Darth Vader is receiving medical treatment after losing the duel on Mustafar against Obi-Wan. In Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, Ponda Baba lost his arm to Obi-Wan's lightsaber, which produced a trail of blood. Following that, every subsequent time a limb is amputated on-screen or a wound of any kind is inflicted by a lightsaber, the lightsaber flash-cauterizes the wound, resulting in little to no blood loss or any visible blood. With each instance of mutilation, dismemberment, punctures, or other wounds scene in the Star Wars series, little to no hemorrhaging or gore can be seen, with Padmé Amidala getting scratched by a nexu, Cordé's bloody figure, and the bloody wounds on Shmi Skywalker being some of the last instances of blood in the Star Wars series. It was only until the Clone Wars series and Revenge of the Sith did blood and gore become truly absent from the series, with the exception of Anakin's burnt, mutilated figure after his defeat by Obi Wan. Also, usual deaths on Star Wars will include wounds that are cauterized or burned, with any bloody or gory injuries being shown on screen.
Biology and appearance
Female Devaronians, like Farnay, lacked horns.
Hailing from the planet Devaron, the Devaronians were a species of sentient humanoids, characterized by two legs, a torso, a single head, two arms with hands, fingers, and an opposable thumb.[1] The Devaronian head featured a nose, a mouth filled with pointed teeth, and two forward-facing eyes, which notably came in shades of red,[5] purple,[6] and dark brown.[3] Both sides of the face were flanked by two pointed ears that stuck out slightly.[5]
The species had two sexes, male and female,[5] which were dimorphic. The males had short horns growing from the top of their heads, while the females were hornless[5] with small vestigial bumps on their foreheads[2] along with a full head of hair.[6] Some female Devaronians possessed a thin coat of gray fur on their body.[9] Males Devaronians were bald— however, some of them grew sideburns[1] as well as beards.[10]
Devaronians had black blood, and were silver-based due to the unique blood filtration and cleansing system of the species. Processed through two livers, their bodies were constantly cleansed of toxins and carcinogens which allowed them to be highly resistant to poison and consume foods toxic to other species. To this end, sulfur was used as a stimulant on Devaron to enhance speed and strength, because inhaling it caused the substance to enter the bloodstream rapidly. Their livers struggled to eliminate sulfur from their system, meaning that long-term use could be dangerous.[2] Their skin was also immune to fire and extremely high temperatures.[11][12]

Personal history
Early history
The history of Devaron was marked by its cultural division between the two genders of the Devaronian species; while males were struck with wanderlust, females sought to establish cities and grow the culture. Developing this divide during the pre-industrial era, males had to travel several days from settlements to hunt for prey while the females maintained the safety and organization of the camp. As wandering the jungles on hunting expeditions became a cultural rite of passage for males of the species, the Devaronian females began to industrialize, evolving over time into a spacefaring culture as early as thirty thousand years before the Battle of Yavin. Harnessing hyperdrive technology, Devaronians began exploring the region of space around Devaron, helping to blaze the Corellian Trade Spine once contact was made with the greater galaxy.[2]
Spaceports began to pop up in settled regions of the planet, with each containing a plaza called the Point of Parting where families bid farewell to the explorers leaving the planet. As the planet developed a planetary government, it became one of the earliest members of the Galactic Republic. One of the outermost planets in the Republic for millennia, Devaronians served as hyperspace scouts and could easily find employment in the field of interstellar travel. Sending a large percentage of their earnings back to Devaron, the planet was able to maintain a thriving economy without polluting the world's lush ecological wonders with the taint of industrial districts. While the government of Devaron had established a fair and balanced democratic system that allowed males and females to pursue the lifestyle they saw best for themselves, most of Devaron's best and brightest leaders, politicians, and business elites were females.[2]
The Jedi and the Clone Wars
Sometime in Devaron's history, the Jedi Order established a training center deep in the jungles of Devaron. The Temple of Eedit was built over a vergence powerful in the Force that imbued the entire area with a deep sense of power. During the Clone Wars, the Grand Army of the Republic maintained an outpost on the planet. The bounty hunter Cad Bane and the Confederacy of Independent Systems attacked Devaron during the war.[5] Later, Savage Opress attacked the Temple of Eedit, killing Jedi Master Halsey and his Padawan Knox. The elite Delta Squad recovered their bodies.[8]
Age of the Empire
At the end of the war, the planet came under Imperial dominion, with a heavy naval presence in the system. Shortly after the Battle of Yavin, Luke Skywalker began to have visions about the Temple of Eedit located there. Traveling to Devaron to visit the temple and begin his Jedi training, he discovered the entrance to the temple by a secret cave next to a derelict dam destroyed during the Clone Wars, with the main temple's entrance being off-limits, and monitored by the Empire. While there Skywalker embarked on a voyage of personal discovery and trained with three remotes, learning how to use lightsaber combat to deflect their blasts. After escaping an Imperial attack on him at the temple, as well as befriending the young Devaronian Farnay, Skywalker vowed to return to the planet once more to uphold the traditions of the Jedi who once dwelt there.[6]
The installation of a corrupt human governor on the planet caused some Devaronians to join the Rebel Alliance. As more and more Devaronians began to resist Imperial rule, the Empire interfered with the remittances fed to the planet by Devaronians abroad in an attempt to make the species easier to control. With the loss of the Imperial Senate, the Devaronians felt that their voice in the galactic conversation had been silenced.[2] After Skywalker defeated the Emperor and Darth Vader in the climactic Battle of Endor, the Jedi Knight returned to Devaron to visit the Temple of Eedit once more. Whilst there he visited Farnay, and thus upheld his promise throughout all the years.[6]
New Republic era
In 5 ABY, the New Republic, the successor to the Rebel Alliance, established several outposts on Devaron. These outposts were manned by diplomats, liaisons, scientists, and soldiers. They also brought food and portable water. One of these outposts was a hundred klicks away from an old Jedi temple. Shortly before the Battle of Jakku, a cell of the Acolytes of the Beyond led by the former Imperial Adviser Yupe Tashu attacked the outpost as part of a series of galactic-wide strikes on New Republic outposts. Two of the participants were the Pantoran Kiza and her human lover Remi. When Remi tried to recover his lightsaber from her, she killed him.[9]
Behind the scenes
First introduced in Legends publications, the planet Devaron was located in the Colonies region of the galaxy. When reintroduced in canon publications, the planet was erroneously stated as being located in the Outer Rim Territories in The Weapon of a Jedi. Future publications, including Nexus of Power and Star Wars: The Force Awakens Beginner Game reaffirmed the planet as being located in the Colonies region.
Following the shattering of the Infinite Empire, the Rakatan's former slaves exterminated them and started to build their own empires with their masters' technology.[6] Once the Core Worlds were joined by renewed communication channels and trade, they united as the first Galactic Republic. To allow easy communication among the new government's members, a trade language later known as Old Galactic Standard was chosen as the new official language of government and commerce. While Old Galactic Standard was mostly derived from Old Coruscanti, the mother tongue of the Humans of Coruscant, its vocabulary incorporated many words from over a dozen other languages,[7] including Durese[8] and Bothese.
By the lifetime of Peshosloc, a holowright who lived between 15,762 BBY and 15,609 BBY, the language had evolved significantly enough to be considered a distinct historical division, which was latter dubbed Mid-Galactic Standard.[9] Galactic Basic was further influenced by Dromnyr after the Vultans joined the Republic around 14,000 BBY, resulting ultimately in the modern Galactic Basic Standard.[10][7]
Under the Galactic Empire, a version of the language was known as Imperial Basic. The language was adopted by the Rebel Alliance, and as such was spoken in the Alliance of Free Planets, the New Republic, the Imperial Remnant, the Galactic Alliance, and the Fel, Sith and True Empires.
Although Aduba-3 was initially colonized by pilgrims from the religious faith known as the Sacred Way, the settlers were not the first to trod upon the planet's surface. During the New Sith Wars between the Jedi Order and Dark Lord of the Sith Skere Kaan, a Sith Lord named Seviss Vaa journeyed to Aduba-3, which at that time was known by a different name. Fascinated by Naga Sadow's alchemical teachings, Vaa dreamed of creating his own dark side creatures and reviving the lost art of Sith alchemy. Vaa chose Aduba-3 as one of his test worlds, and began testing his ancient arts on local wildlife. Vaa took a local lizard and mutated it into a hulking, monstrous brute designed specifically to target Jedi, reacting to the energies given off by their lightsabers and attacking them with a lightning beam projected from its forehead. The creature was powerful, yet flawed an unstable—an early experiment, but to Vaa, it was certainly one worthy of revisiting. Vaa put the creature into suspended animation in an underground cave as he moved onto other projects, but was soon afterward killed in the Ruusan campaign, leaving his creature slumbering beneath the surface.[3]
After the arrival of the Sacred Way, society on Aduba-3 took shape as an agricultural colony governed in accordance with the Way's teachings. Small villages soon began to dot the planet's grasslands—one of these communities, Onacra, was settled almost on top of the resting place of Seviss Vaa's monstrous creation. A Force-sensitive villager somehow learned of the beast's existence, and thus the local legend of the "Behemoth from the World Below" was born, as the villagers told stories of how the creature would protect the village in its time of need. This pastoral existence was eventually interrupted in the latter years of the Galactic Republic, when miners discovered highly valuable chromium in the planet's crust, leading to a massive rush that brought a large amount of outside investment and activity. The mines were dry within a year—eventually, it was discovered that the only decent chromium in Aduba-3's surface had been planted, likely by the Tenloss Syndicate-affiliated Modirin Mining Concern. The scam's explosion left hundreds of offworlders ruined, and lacking even the credits to haul off their equipment, they left behind dozens of abandoned factories and mines.[3]
However, the disaster proved to be a major, convenient opportunity to the Mining Concern, which bought the discarded equipment at a steep discount and sold it off for a massive profit. Modirin left the mining towns intact after selling off the machinery, and Tenloss began renting the remaining buildings around the planet's principal spaceport to locals who eventually facilitated the town's transformation into Tun Aduban, a shadowport catering to a highly transient population of spacers and criminals. But while the Tenloss Syndicate remained essentially in control of the planet, they maintained little presence on the planet, only periodically sending a ship to collect rent on the buildings it owned. Aduba-3's lawless society allowed it to be a breeding ground for swoop gangs—by 0 ABY, one of the most fearsome of these was the Cloud-Riders, who targeted the small farming villages in the plains west of Tun Aduban. Led by a former professional swoop racer named Serji-X Arrogantus, the Cloud-Riders earned a notorious reputation for stealing crops and women, and committing acts of violence against anyone who resisted.[3]
One of the Cloud-Riders' favorite targets was a village called Onacra, conveniently located closest to the gang's camp in the hills. Onacra's annual tithe was set at 9,000 credits a year, a very steep price for the small and poor community. It took only three years for Onacra to grow tired of this arrangement,[3] and in 0 ABY, a villager named Ramiz made his way to Tun Aduban to find a champion to defend his village.[5] Who he found was Han Solo, the smuggler and Rebel hero who had stopped on Aduba-3 after participating in the Rebel victory at the Battle of Yavin. Solo and his Wookiee companion Chewbacca had gotten in a massive brawl almost immediately after landing in Tun Aduban, as they defended the local Sacred Way priest, a Verpine known as Pera, from an angry mob who attempted to stop him from granting a proper funeral to a cyborg. After fighting off their attackers, Solo and Chewbacca walked to the local cantina,[4] where Ramiz asked him to help Onacra.[5]
