Asajj Ventress was a Dathomirian female who was, at various points throughout her life, a slave, a Jedi Padawan, an assassin of the Sith, a Nightsister and a bounty hunter. In the final decades of the Galactic Republic's reig

Narec raised Ventress and taught her to use the Force in the ways of the Jedi Order, and together they protected the populace of Rattatak and fought back against the predatory attacks of pirates and warlords. After a decade of helping the local population, Ventress was orphaned once more when Narec was killed by pirates seeking to end the Jedi's crusade on their world. Enraged by the loss and bereft of guidance, Ventress embraced the dark side of the Force, deposing the local warlords and ruling in their stead. She was ultimately captured while attempting to assassinate the warlord Osika Kirske, who forced her to fight as a gladiator in his arena. She was eventually discovered by the Sith Lord Count Dooku and fell under his guidance and tutelage as a Dark Acolyte and aspiring apprentice.
When the pan-galactic Clone Wars erupted between the Galactic Republic and Dooku's Confederacy of Independent Systems, Ventress became a commander in her Master's Separatist droid military and an assassin in the employ of the Sith. Her exploits brought her into conflict with the Jedi Order and she became renowned for her skill and cruelty as she waged war against the Republic. She frequently crossed lightsabers with Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, heroes of the Republic who were often assigned to counter Ventress's efforts. Although she was highly talented and saw success in the kidnapping of Rotta the Hutt, the rescue of Nute Gunray, and the infiltration of the Republic fortress world of Kamino, Ventress was repeatedly forced to compete for her Master's favor against Confederate military leader General Grievous.
As the war progressed, Dooku's own master, Darth Sidious, became increasingly wary of Ventress's growing strength in the Force and ultimately ordered the Confederate leader to eliminate his apprentice in a show of loyalty. Dooku complied, and during the Battle of Sullust, betrayed Ventress and ordered her own forces to execute her. Left for dead, Ventress survived and clawed her way back to her homeworld of Dathomir to seek refuge and revenge. Mother Talzin and her coven welcomed Ventress back to their sisterhood and together they conspired to kill Dooku. After a failed attempt to assassinate the count, Ventress and Talzin moved to install a pawn of their own close to Dooku as his new assassin and apprentice.
To that end, Ventress selected the Zabrak Nightbrother Savage Opress to be gifted to Dooku and eventually to aid her in his murder. This plan also went awry after Opress betrayed both Ventress and Dooku and nearly killed them both. Resolving to make a new life for herself, Ventress returned to Dathomir to formally rejoin her clan and forgo further plans for revenge, but Dooku would not have it. The count targeted the Nightsisters for harboring his former apprentice and dispatched Grievous and his droid army to massacre the Dathomirian witches. Mother Talzin and Ventress were among the few survivors of the slaughter and were forced to separately flee Dathomir to escape Dooku's wrath.
Ventress was deeply hurt by the loss of her newfound family and so took to wandering the galaxy in search of a purpose, ultimately turning to bounty hunting, and finding a good measure of success in the business. This work forced her to adopt a series of unexpected alliances—she rescued Obi-Wan Kenobi from the clutches of the former Sith Lord Maul and Savage Opress, who had recently apprenticed himself to his renegade Sith brother—and worked alongside Skywalker's apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, when Tano was falsely accused of bombing the Jedi Temple.
Near the end of the Clone Wars, she encountered Quinlan Vos, a Jedi Master tasked with assassinating Count Dooku to end the war. Vos partnered with Ventress under the guise of a fellow bounty hunter but ultimately revealed his identity and purpose after the two fell in love. Ventress trained Vos in Nightsister culture and dark-side skills to prepare for a strike against Dooku, but their attempt to kill the count failed, and she was forced to flee while he was taken into Confederate custody. She eventually worked with Kenobi and Skywalker to rescue Vos, but months of torture at Dooku's hand had turned him to the dark side.

Lightsaber abilities
"Do you think you'll still be able to call on the Force once I've separated your head from your body?"
"Even with my vision clouded, I recognize the fighting style of Count Dooku. Your version is unrefined, amateurish, sloppy."
―Ventress and Luminara Unduli[src]
Ventress was exceptionally skilled with a blade.
Asajj Ventress was a master of Jar'Kai, a style she acquired after the death of her first master, Ky Narec, taking up his lightsaber alongside her own.[5] Under Count Dooku, the mechanisms in her new curved lightsabers enabled her to combine them into a bizarre, though effective, S-shaped double-bladed weapon[20] known as a split saber.[50] These red blades became her distinctive weapon.[41]
Under the tutelage of Dooku, Ventress learned to utilize Form II. However, her technique still was not without its flaws; notably her version was criticized by a temporarily blinded Luminara Unduli as being "unrefined," "amateurish," and "sloppy." By the time of their duel, Ventress had already developed a physical strength to hold up simultaneous bladelocks with multiple duelists at a time, and Ahsoka Tano recognized her as "too powerful for any one Jedi to fight alone."[16]
Ventress proved a match for both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in many of their encounters.[51] On Teth, she disarmed Kenobi—a member of the Jedi Council—who later deprived her of one of her weapons in return.[20] She was able to contend with General Grievous, as she gained the upper hand and cut one of his robotic arms in a lightsaber duel.[32]
In one instance, Ventress managed to wield a lightsaber with both hands tied behind her back, all the while fighting off the Ohkona Gang. Assisted by the Force, she detected the direction of blaster bolts and used the blade to deflect them as well as make physical contact with a few pirates.[43] As the Ohnaka Gang came to see during the encounter, Ventress changing her allegiances and lightsaber did nothing to make her less dangerous. She was also, to her surprise, happy to replace her old red lightsabers after spending a time inconvenienced by their loss. She realized the blades had been her last physical link to her time as Dooku's apprentice, and she was pleased to find her new lightsaber produced a pale yellow blade.[41]
Force powers
"When Ky Narec was killed, I allowed my hatred to take over. Hatred gave me access to abilities the Jedi think are too unnatural. But the Sith know that hatred is the path to ultimate power."
―Asajj Ventress[src]
Ventress Force-chokes two clone troopers while telekinetically lifting them in the air.
Ventress was viewed by Obi-Wan Kenobi as having immense willpower, with more experience in the Force than many Jedi Knights.[4] Darth Sidious himself sensed that the Dathomirian was growing more powerful and feared that his apprentice, Darth Tyranus, would use her to help overthrow him as Dark Lord of the Sith.[5] All of this had been in due part to her close connection with the dark side.[30]
Ventress displayed a great aptitude for Force-enhanced jumps, frequently employing them during her duels. She was also skilled with telekinesis, as witnessed when she lifted Captain Rex in the air, while simultaneously choking him.[20] Later, the assassin proved herself capable of Force-choking and telekinetically levitating Skywalker and Kenobi simultaneously, when fueled by her rage, pain and desperation. Shortly after, she used that same power on Ratch and his three men, this time achieving a lethal result.[5] Ventress demonstrated an aptitude for using mind tricks, though Rex was able to avoid her influence when contacting Skywalker.[20]
Hunting skill
Ventress also displayed skill in unarmed combat, being able to easily fight a group of Nightbrothers when she was looking for a suitable servant on Dathomir.[6] Her hand-to-hand combat skills were later displayed when she fought Savage Opress and Maul alongside Kenobi, dodging Opress's aggressive blows and striking back with a flurry of punches and kicks until Kenobi returned her lightsaber to her.[35]

Personal history
Early history
The Rift Valley, site of a battle that took place on Dathomir.
Hundreds of years before 3 BBY, the six-armed Fromprath species lived on Dathomir, but were exiled from the planet after being forced out[23] by the Nightsisters,[29] a reclusive people who hid dark secrets.[9] The Fromprath exploited the natural resources of the planet, which caused the Nightsisters to form a symbiotic alliance with rancors, in order to drive out the colonizers.[29]
The Galactic Republic was known to have dropped off it prisoners and criminals on the planet.[16] In 600 BBY,[30] the Jedi Allya, was exiled to the planet Dathomir. She taught the women on the planet ways of the Force.[16]
Before the Jedi-Sith War, Darth Caldoth stole a burial pod from the planet. The Nightsister Zeldin went to confront him.[31]
Era of the Republic
"Long ago, Sidious came to me on Dathomir. We exchanged secret wisdom—mingled dark side abilities with Nightsister Magicks. He promised to make me his right hand, but instead he stole what was most dear to me…my own flesh and blood. My son!"
―Mother Talzin[32]
Talzin's son Maul, abducted by the Sith.
Prior to the Battle of Naboo, the Sith Lord Darth Sidious went to Dathomir where he traded secrets of the dark side of the Force with the Nightsisters' leader, Mother Talzin. He took Talzin's son, the Nightbrother Maul as his apprentice.[32] One of Talzin's fellow Nightsisters also had a child, Asajj Ventress, and was forced by Talzin to give her up to the criminal Hal'Sted in order to protect their coven.[8]
Prior to the Clone Wars, OteroaCorp created their twentieth settlement on Dathomir. Oteroa Zero-Twenty was located in a jungle near the Nardithi Cluster. An OteroaCorp ship called the The Oteroan Sky crashed after it was sabotaged by the Nardithi Nightsisters and it crashed into the city, destroying it.[13]
Sometime prior to 14 BBY,[33] the Jedi Master Eno Cordova explored the planet for relics of the Zeffo civilization and discovered the Tomb of Kujet. Supposedly overcoming a trial of some description, Eno made it inside the Tomb.[11]
Savage Opress in the Selection
Darth Maul's R3-series astromech droid R3-B0017, was programmed to scavenge the planet.[34] During the Clone Wars, Ventress returned to Dathomir and her coven's village following Count Dooku's assassination attempt at Sullust. Ventress was then healed and accepted the Nightsisters' help in assassinating Dooku. Despite Ventress's failure, Talzin was able to reach out to Dooku and offer him a new assassin to replace Ventress.[8]
Dooku traveled to Dathomir to the Nightsisters' village where he proposed an alliance between his Confederacy of Independent Systems and Talzin's coven. Talzin refused his offer but agreed to supply him with a Nightbrother similar to Maul. Dooku accepted her offer and departed. Ventress traveled to the Nightbrother village, where she chose several to participate in tests in their arena. After killing and wounding several of the chosen Nightbrothers, Ventress chose Savage Opress to be her replacement. Ventress then took Opress to the Nightsisters' village, where they used their magick to increase his strength and power. After Opress demonstrated his loyalty by killing his brother, he was given to Dooku.[18]
Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker went to Dathomir to speak with the Nightbrothers about Opress's whereabouts. Brother Viscus told them one of Talzin's Nightsisters took Opress as a mate to their village. Kenobi and Skywalker went to the Nightsisters, where Talzin told them that Opress was on Toydaria. After Opress's role was discovered, he returned to Dathomir. There, Talzin told him that his last surviving brother, Maul, was in exile somewhere in the Outer Rim. Opress left to find him, promising to return.[15]
The Nightsisters summon their Army of the Dead to defend against the Separatists.
Ventress returned to Dathomir, where she was fully accepted into the Nightsisters. However, Darth Sidious and Dooku decided to send Grievous and his Droid Army to Dathomir to wipe the Nightsisters out for their attempts on Dooku's life. At first, the Nightsister and their Army of the Dead were able to hold out against Grievous's forces. However, Dooku was able to subdue the Nightsisters when Grievous killed Old Daka. All the Nightsisters, except Ventress and Talzin, were eradicated. While Ventress became a bounty hunter,[35] Talzin continued to guide Opress to his brother from the village.[24] Opress later returned to Dathomir with Maul. At the village, Talzin was able to restore Maul's sanity and gave him a new pair of cybernetic legs before she disappeared.[36] Ventress returned to Dathomir with under cover Jedi Master Quinlan Vos to teach to use his emotions to to strengthen his bond with the Dark Side.[20]
Maul returned to Dathomir with Dooku to the Nightbrothers' village. There, Talzin attempted to use Dooku in a ritual that would restore her physical form. However, Grievous, Sidious and their forces then arrived to Dathomir and proceeded to decimate the Shadow Collective, with a newly restored Talzin perishing at Grievous' hands in the process of saving her son. Maul and what remained of his forces fled,[26] and Dathomir was left to the conquerors.[37] After Ventress was killed, Vos and Kenobi returned her body to Dathomir for a funeral, where her body was claimed by the waters of Dathomir to rest with her fallen sisters.[20]
Imperial Era
Prior to the end of the Clone Wars, an elite Separatist unit shot down Jedi General Weren Dal over Dathomir.[38] Fel Trech crash landed on the planet, becoming mentally ill with survivor's guilt. He lived in a cave located in a mountain range and had a distress beacon that generated a detectable signal.[13] During the Great Jedi Purge, the Jedi Master Taron Malicos crash landed on the desolate planet. Though he survived the crash, the strong presence of the dark side of the Force drove him insane and he eventually usurped control of the surviving Nightbrothers by killing Brother Viscus.[11]
At some point, a female Inquisitor came to Dathomir, where she discovered Jerserra, a survivor of the Battle of Dathomir, and trained her secretly to use as a weapon against the other Inquisitors. Before leaving, Jerserra took a shard of the Nardithi Cluster. Jerserra eventually killed her master and became a mercenary.[13]
At some point before 3 ABY,[39] Doctor Aphra and Just Lucky traveled to the planet. Lucky was left behind on Dathomir by Aphra during the visit.[40]
Sometime prior sometime between 0 BBY and 4 ABY,[41] Lieutenant Thom Hudd took Dathomiri spider-silk, which were used as shrouds, from a burial site on Dathomir, not knowing it was cursed.[42]
In 14 BBY,[33] instructed by a hologram left by Eno Cordova through his droid BD-1, the former Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis arrived on Dathomir with his companions, Cere Junda, Cordova's former Padawan, and Greez Dritus, their pilot. Cal was confronted by an unknown Nightsister, later revealed to be Merrin, one of the last of her kind. Merrin blamed the Jedi for the massacre that decimated her people, and does everything in her power to impede Cal. On his way to the tomb, Cal encountered a mysterious wanderer who warned Cal about the dangers the tomb posed. Ignoring him, Cal proceeded onward, and after being forced to fight the undead Nightsisters brought back to life by Merrin, he eventually made it into the tomb. Within, he experienced a flashback where he remembered his master, Jaro Tapal sacrificing himself to protect him from the clone troopers during the Purge, Cal was attacked by a manifestation of Jaro's spirit, resulting in his lightsaber being destroyed. Cal soon learned that the mysterious wanderer he had encountered earlier was former Jedi Taron Malicos, who sought to learn the power of the Nightsisters and manipulated them against the Jedi. Malicos offered to teach Cal how to handle the dark power of Dathomir against Merrin's wishes. Cal refused and fled Dathomir when Merrin attacked.[11]
In 14 BBY, Merrin, a Nightsister who survived Grievous' attack, left Dathomir along with Jedi survivor Cal Kestis and his ship's crew to explore the galaxy.
After constructing a new lightsaber, Cal returned to Dathomir to complete his trials. Cal faced Jaro's spirit again, defeating him by overcoming his feelings of guilt over his death. Malicos again attempted to sway Cal to the dark side, and he attacked when Cal refused him. Merrin helped Cal defeat Malicos by using her magick to bury him alive, and afterward she decided to join the Mantis crew.[11]
Bridger and Maul fight off the Nightsister ghosts.
Maul would lead the criminal syndicate Crimson Dawn[43] from his room in the Nightsister fortress on Dathomir.[44] In 10 BBY, after the death of his minion Dryden Vos, Maul summoned Qi'ra, another of his underlings, to his homeworld, warning her they would be working more closely.[43] When Qi'ra arrived on Dathomir, Maul brought her to the fortress, explaining to her the Sith Rule of Two.[44]
Sometime later in 2 BBY,[45] Maul would again return to Dathomir, this time accompanied by Ezra Bridger. There, Maul showed Bridger the remnants of his homeworld and finally, brought the young Jedi to the Nightsister village to partake in a ritual that would give each other the knowledge they sought from holocrons. However, when Bridger's companions Kanan Jarrus and Sabine Wren were possessed, Bridger left Maul to help them, causing Maul to leave Dathomir and dismiss his attempt to take Bridger as his apprentice as a failure.[12]
Galactic Civil War
Prior to the Battle of Yavin, the Galactic Empire established a presence on Dathomir in the form of a garrison. Light cruisers and exploratory craft were known to have made secret visits and the Empire had taken a quiet interest in Dathomir, despite a lack of information on Imperial records. Despite the rumors of the Empire maintaining a garrison on Dathomir, there were no known logistics or personnel records to support the rumors.[6]
In 0 BBY,[46] the force ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi's stated to Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker that Dathomir, as well as many other planets, would be freed from the Empire's grip.[47]
New Republic Era
"Greetings from Dathomir, home of the rancor. Speaking of which, our friend over there could use a good old teeth-cleaning, wouldn't you say."
―Aree[22]
During or after 34 ABY,[48] the safari droid SF-R3 and his companion cam droid CAM were sent by Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts on a mission to Dathomir in order to research how to clean a rancor's teeth. However, Aree was eaten by the rancor. Waking up in the mouth of the rancor, Aree tickled part of the mouth, causing the rancor to spit out Aree. He used a bone to tickle the nose of the rancor, causing it to open it's mouth. Aree stuck the bone in the rancor's mouth, however, it was quickly snapped in half by the rancor. Aree detached his arm and stuck it in it's mouth, this time in success, and began to work on cleaning the teeth. The process was tedious, and by the end Aree had only cleaned one tooth. Disturbed by bird, Aree shooed it away, causing the rancor to sneeze the safari droid back again. The birds then rushed to clean the rancor's teeth naturally in a quick and easy process. Aree came to the conclusion that the best way to clean the rancor's teeth is to let nature take its course.[22]
