Originally a slave on Tatooine, Anakin Skywalker is a Jedi prophesied to bring balance to the Force. He is lured to the dark side of the Force by Chancellor Palpatine and becomes a Sith Lord, assuming the title of Darth Vader. After a lightsaber battle with his former mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar, in which he is severely injured, Vader is transformed into a cyborg. He then serves the Galactic Empire for over two decades as its chief enforcer. Vader ultimately redeems himself by saving his son, Luke Skywalker, and killing Palpatine, sacrificing his own life in the process.[6] He is also the secret husband of Padmé Amidala, the biological father of Princess Leia, and the grandfather of Kylo Ren (Ben Solo).
The character has been portrayed by numerous actors: David Prowse physically portrayed Vader while James Earl Jones voiced him in the original trilogy, and Sebastian Shaw portrayed the unmasked Anakin in Return of the Jedi, as well as the character's spirit in the original release of that film. Jake Lloyd played Anakin Skywalker as a child in The Phantom Menace, the first film of the prequel trilogy, while Hayden Christensen played him as a young adult in the following two films.[g]
In addition to the first six Star Wars films, the character appears in the anthology film Rogue One. He also appears in television series (most substantially The Clone Wars) and numerous iterations of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, including video games, novels, and comic books. Due to Vader's popularity, various merchandise of the character, such as action figures and replicas of his lightsaber, has been produced.
Darth Vader, formerly known as the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, was a master Sith Lord who served Emperor Palpatine.

Powers and Abilities
Powers
The Force: Vader has an amazingly strong connection to the Force. As the Chosen One, Vader is stronger than any Force-user in existence. According to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Vader's potential in the Force surpassed that of even Yoda and Sheev Palpatine. His Force powers were rivaled by his son Luke Skywalker. Being burned alive on Mustafar and forced to become a cyborg, with the transformation causing him psychological trauma, didn't stop Vader from becoming an amazingly powerful Force-user. Due to his prosthetic arms and hands, however, he can't utilize or be immune to Force lightning, and the life support systems keeping him alive also make him incredibly vulnerable to it. To maintain his armor at peak efficiency, Vader also heavily relies on the dark side of the Force.
Telekinesis: Vader can telekinetically move objects or other individuals without physically touching them, and he utilizes it for offensive or defensive purposes. In one issue of Marvel Comics' Vader Down series, Vader was able to simultaneously fly his TIE Advanced and use his telekinetic abilities to destroy Rebel starfighters, taking out three squadrons of X-wings in this fashion. Additionally, in the sixth issue of Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith: The Chosen One, Vader was shown to efficiently and effortlessly repair his damaged armor through manipulating multiple tools and the armor itself using telekinesis, all while limbless and recovering from his wounds inside a bacta tank. In the eighth issue, he managed to easily levitate the pieces of Jocasta Nu's starfighter and rearrange them back into place after the ship had self destructed, revealing it as a Jedi craft and that she was on the planet, alerting the Imperials station there. He could also effortlessly maintain an air bubble at crushing depths on the watery world of Mon Cala using telekinesis to prevent the water pressure from crushing him as was revealed in the the third issue of Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith: Burning Seas.
Force Push: Vader can telekinetically send his opponents flying through the air, causing serious injury or temporarily incapacitating/knocking them unconscious, depending on how much power is unleashed. In the Lords of the Sith novel, Vader's was strong enough to send a large telekinetic pulse capable of ripping apart several Lyleks simultaneously, despite the fact that the creatures' carapaces were impervious to even heavy blaster fire.
Force Pull: Vader can telekinetically pull his opponents or objects towards him.
Force Repel: Vader can unleash a wave of pure Force energy that knocks back and repels anything within the power's blast radius or pushes multiple opponents simultaneously. He unleashed a telekinetic tremor that destroyed the medical chamber where he was first encased with his armor, while multiple objects and droids were simultaneously crushed, and Sidious was blasted against a wall.
Force Choke: Vader can telekinetically choke his opponents to either weaken, kill or intimidate them. He can also do this from a great distance simply by knowing the targets location relative to himself, as he choked Admiral Ozzel from several kilometers away on another ship while looking at him through a view screen. This is also one of his favorite moves.
Force Grip: Vader can telekinetically lift his opponents off the ground and into the air, sometimes by the neck, to immobilize them. His abilities also allows him to influence the movements of individuals, as demonstrated when he forced Ezra Bridger to raise his lightsaber towards his own neck while also pinning him against a wall. Additionally, he was able to freeze two Inquisitors in place before forcing them to activate their lightsabers, and fatally stab the other, all as punishment for their romantic entanglements with each other.
Force Stasis: Vader can telekinetically slow down or completely halt the motion of a target, holding them in place with a paralyzing grip. In Darth Vader 4: Vader, Part II, he managed to momentarily freeze the explosion generated by a grenade thrown at him by clone troopers, which, while straining, allowed him time to get out of its blast radius safely before he released it.
Force Levitation: Vader can telekinetically levitate himself or slow down his fall to the ground.
Force Crush: Vader can telekinetically crush objects or droids.
Force Throw: Vader can telekinetically objects and other individuals to be hurled toward a target at an astounding velocity. Vader used this power in his second confrontation against his son, Luke.
Force Barrier: Vader can create a barrier or wall of Force energy in front of or surrounding himself or his allies. He notably used this to shield himself from debris in Darth Vader 4: Vader, Part IV.
Saber Throw: Vader can telekinetically guide his lightsaber towards his opponents and return the weapon back to his hand, similar to a boomerang or shuriken.
Energy Absorption: Vader can dissipate concentrated energy such as blaster bolts with his bare hands, although it is difficult to do so. He notably used this ability on Cloud City to harmlessly absorb Han Solo's blasterfire with his hand before telekinetically disarming Han.
Force Deflection: Vader can telekinetically redirect incoming attacks such as blaster bolts, with or without his lightsaber, although it is difficult to do so. By the time of the Death Star's creation, he became able to temporarily cause blaster bolts to bounce off his body and back towards his opponents, as he did during his slaughter of a group of rebels that barely managed to get the plans for the superweapon onboard Leia's blockade runner.
Telepathy: Vader can telepathically communicate with other individuals over small or vast distances, especially his son, Luke Skywalker. This was shown in a deleted scene of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, in which he managed to communicate with Luke.
Mind Probe: Vader can telepathically sense and sift through the thoughts and memories of other sentient beings. This allowed him to sense the thoughts and feelings of Luke when he was emotionally vulnerable, leading to him realizing that Luke had a sister, Leia Organa.
Mind Trick: Vader can communicate or control the minds of other sentient beings, except for individuals with indomitable wills. However, he can combine this power with other Force-users to bypass the said indomitable will.
Taming Beasts: Vader can control the minds of animals. As seen in Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith: Burning Seas- Part 3, in his attack on Mon Cala to hunt the Jedi Farren Barr, Vader used the Force to tame a large squid. He convinced it to not eat him, bring him his lost lightsaber, and then carry him back to the surface depths.
Force Vision: Vader can see visions of the past, present, and future. However, like all Force-users, his visions are not always clear or sometimes they happen without warning.
Force Sense: Vader can sense another sentient being's emotions, the future, ripples in the Force caused by momentous or traumatic events, impending danger, and the presence of other light or dark side Force-users. His senses are so powerful that he was able to sense the presence of his former mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi on the first Death Star, besides sensing the presence of his son Luke on more than one occasion.
Focused Rage: Vader can channel his anger to amplify his strength, durability, endurance, speed, ferocity, aggression and the potency of his combat prowess/attacks.
Force Jump: Vader can jump or leap great distances, although he rarely uses this power due to the limits of his suit and heavy cybernetics.
Force Dash: Vader can move at amazing speeds.
Fold Space: Vader can transport anything across space. He is only able to perform such a feat with the help of a cosmic gateway made within his castle.
Teleportation: Vader can open a wormhole, but it is immensely difficult and painful to do so. Such portal is generated by his own castle, which is designed to harness the power of the dark side on Mustafar.
Advanced Strength: Vader utilizes his Force powers to amplify his physical strength, making him physically stronger than most, if not all other sentient beings. His cybernetic enhancements also allow him additional strength to overpower other individuals with far greater ease.
Cybernetic Enhancements: Vader utilizes his cybernetic enhancements in combat, giving him greater strength to easily subdue, restrain, and overpower his opponents. He can effortlessly lift humans off the ground with one hand while holding them by the neck, crush bones in his fist, or throw people across rooms. Despite his great strength, physically lighter opponents can still block him in a lightsaber duel, such as Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Ahsoka Tano, and even his son, Luke Skywalker respectively. His cybernetic enhancements are enough to allow him to even stand against the might of a Wookiee and Trandoshan respectively.
Abilities
Master Lightsaber Duelist: Vader is a highly skilled lightsaber duelist, with his skills being rivaled by his son, Luke Skywalker. According to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Vader's lightsaber combat skills surpassed that of even Yoda and Sheev Palpatine. However, after being burned alive on Mustafar and forced to become a cyborg, his armored suit seemed to affect his mobility. Despite this, Vader still became a master lightsaber duelist. He is specialized in using his lightsaber combat skills, weight, endurance, and sheer brute strength to overwhelm his opponents into confusion or exhaustion, such as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka Tano, and Luke Skywalker. Vader also regained some of his old agility and his blade work became brutally effective. Vader's technique and fighting style is a combination of brute strength and lethal precision, as his armor hampered some of his movement and he needed to constantly protect the control panel on his chest from attack, where he would otherwise be vulnerable to it. The full extent of his lightsaber combat skills is demonstrated during his duel with Ahsoka. However, as seen in "A World Between Worlds", if a future version of Ezra had not rescued Ahsoka from Vader, he would have striked her down. His lightsaber combat skills are such that he is extremely confident in his abilities. During the events portrayed in the issues of the Marvel Comics story Vader Down, Vader was able to single-handedly take on a platoon of three squadrons of X-wing fighters, several Y-wing fighters, and hundreds of Rebel soldiers that surrounded him on the planet of Vrogas Vas, saying that despite their greater numbers, all he was surrounded by was fear and dead men before slaughtering them all with terrifying ease. In a lightsaber duel during the same battle, he also is able to kill Karbin, the Mon Calamari cyborg commander for the Empire and Vader's intended replacement, albeit with some assistance from Dr. Aphra.
Form I: Vader is highly skilled in Shii-Cho. After becoming a cyborg, Vader's skills in Shii-Cho greatly improved to the point of mastery.
Form II: After becoming a cyborg, Vader studied Makashi and became a master of the style.
Form III: After becoming a cyborg, Vader studied Soresu and became a master of the style. Vader became so skilled at it that he was able to overcome and best Obi-Wan Kenobi in their final confrontation, despite Obi-Wan being a master of the style in his own right.
Form IV: Vader is highly skilled in Ataru, at some point during the Clone Wars, he made some adjustments to Ataru to make it far more effective in defending against incoming projectiles or range attackers. After becoming a cyborg, Vader's skills in Ataru greatly improved to the point of mastery. He trained even to best Yoda, the leader of the Jedi Order, in the case they ever faced each other directly in a duel.
Form V: Vader is a master of Shien/Djem So, considered by many to be the most proficient practitioner of the style. After becoming a cyborg, he created a personal variant that included elements of all seven forms of lightsaber combat.
Form VI: Vader is highly skilled in Niman. After becoming a cyborg, Vader's skills in Niman greatly improved to the point of mastery.
Form VII: After becoming a cyborg, Vader studied Juyo/Vaapad and became a master of the style.
Jar'Kai: Vader is highly skilled in Jar'Kai. After becoming a cyborg, Vader's skills in Jar'Kai greatly improved to the point of mastery.
Sai cha: Vader is highly skilled in Sai cha.
Cho mai: Vader is highly skilled in Cho mai.
Cho sun: Vader is highly skilled in Cho sun.
Shiak: Vader is highly skilled in Shiak.
Mounted lightsaber combat: Vader is highly skilled in Mounted lightsaber combat.
Master Pilot: Even before Vader's fall to the dark side, he was praised as the most skilled star-pilot in the history of the galaxy, a reputation he lived up to when he single-handedly almost destroyed Phoenix Squadron in his TIE Advanced, easily out-flying their entire fleet and forcing their command to abandon ship. Vader's piloting skills were rivaled only by his son, Luke Skywalker.
Expert Hand-To-Hand Combatant: Vader is an extremely skilled hand-to-hand combatant, although he normally uses his brute strength against others, allowing him to defeat others with less of a need for skill.
Expert Marksman: Although rarely seen, Vader is highly skilled in the use of blaster pistols.
Master Engineer: Even before Vader's fall to the dark side, he is amazingly skilled in engineering, he can personally repair starships to maintain his skill. Repairing such machinery and vehicles also act as a form of meditation for Vader, allowing him to focus and clear his mind.
Genius-Level Intellect/Master Tactician/Leader: Even before Vader's fall to the dark side, he was amazingly intelligent and wise. As the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Military and a member of the Imperial High Command, Vader is a highly skilled tactician and a very capable leader. Due to his experience from the Clone Wars, he has an excellent reputation of never being defeated, he can also use his opponents own tactics against them. Furthermore, Vader often uses his environment to his advantage, using the terrain against his opponents by using whatever is at his disposal, such as throwing shrapnel and wreckage at his foes. In Vader Down, he used shrapnel and wreckage from his own TIE Advanced to decimate his enemies on Vrogas Vas in conjunction with his Force skills and his lightsaber.
Intimidation: As an immensely powerful Force-user, Vader commends an intimidating presence to the point where many of his allies and enemies alike across the galaxy fear him, even exceptionally powerful Force-users, turning Vader in one of the most, if not the most feared Sith in the entire galaxy.
Multilingual: Mostly due to Vader's interactions as Anakin Skywalker, he is capable of fluently speaking Basic, Huttese, Bith, and Sith tongue.

Personal history
It was homeworld to the native Jawa and Tusken Raider species—and presumably with vast oceans of surface water, lush rainforest[4] and flowered fields.[25] According to the Legend of Lehon, Tatooine had also been inhabited by a group called the Kumumgah during this time, but there was little evidence to support the story.[45] Sometime in Tatooine's history, the whole planet became a desert by unknown means[5] when the oceans dried away.[46] Much later, it would be colonized by early settlers and explorers, who mistook the planet for a third sun owing to its highly reflective silicate surface.[5]
Jawa traders sold scrap to offworlders who settled on Tatooine as moisture farmers
As a result of sporadic and unsuccessful colonization ventures, the planet became a haven for smugglers and criminal activity, while scattered, isolated settlements of hard-working inhabitants attempted to earn a living in the wastes.[5]
A long-ago mining boom saw the widespread use of sandcrawlers on the desert plains in an effort to mine valuable minerals. However, after it was discovered that most valuable minerals could be found on the surface,[5] along with most minerals having unwanted metallurgic properties,[4] the sandcrawlers were abandoned and eventually picked up by the native Jawas for use as shelter and mobile bases, from which they collected scrap from thousands of years of crashed spacecraft and failed mining projects.[5]
Offworlders erected various cities in the desert, and colonists who decided to stay on the planet built moisture farms. The B'omarr Order on Tatooine kept their disembodied brains floating in jars that hung below their spider-like droid bodies, and built a monastery on the planet which would eventually come under the ownership of Jabba Desilijic Tiure as his palace.[5]
Most wealth eventually found its way into the city of Mos Espa, with most of it procured from gambling and off-world trade, especially through the lucrative black market. The influx of commercial ventures fueled Mos Espa's growth, eventually securing its regional importance as a hub of economic and financial activity. With high tariffs imposed by the Hutts, some believed themselves able to escape paying them by doing business in the planet's de facto capital, however often found themselves scammed and broke if not through gambling, through simple bad luck.[4]
Scum and villainy
"The Republic doesn't exist out here. We must survive on our own."
―Shmi Skywalker, to Padmé Amidala[src]
In the last decades of the Galactic Republic, Tatooine was known as a haven for smugglers and criminal activity,[5] and also as the home to a human slave named Shmi Skywalker and her son Anakin.[20]
During this period, Queen Padmé Amidala of Naboo escaped the capture of her homeworld by the Trade Federation, and she took refuge on Tatooine with her companions and protectors, including the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Skywalkers befriended Amidala's party, and the young slave ended up participating in a podrace to help his new friends obtain a new T-14 hyperdrive generator for their damaged starship. After discovering that Anakin Skywalker would make an exceptional recruit for the Jedi Order, Master Qui-Gon Jinn managed to obtain his freedom from the junk dealer Watto in the city of Mos Espa, and the Queen's party left Tatooine with the boy. After participating in numerous adventures, including the Invasion of Naboo, the former Tatooinian slave joined the Jedi Order under Kenobi's tutelage.[20]
Ten years later, Skywalker, now a gifted but unruly Jedi student, sensed that his mother, who had stayed on Tatooine and gotten married, was in terrible pain. Skywalker returned to the desert world in the company of Amidala, who was now a senator of the Republic and the young Jedi's secret lover. It transpired that Shmi Skywalker had been captured by Tusken Raiders and was detained in one of their camps. When Skywalker finally discovered his mother's location, he arrived too late, and she died in his arms from the consequences of the Tuskens' mistreatment of her. Enraged, the young Jedi slaughtered the entire Tusken tribe. This had serious consequences as the first step towards Anakin Skywalker's fall from grace. Shortly after the incident, the Clone Wars broke out, and the tortured Tatooinian Jedi became a major player of the pan-galactic conflict.[47]
During the Clone Wars, a Jedi-backed mission to Jabba's Palace occurred, with the Jedi hoping to rescue Rotta the Huttlet from the Separatist Alliance.[48] Later during the war, Chairman Papanoida and his son, Ion Papanoida headed to Tatooine to track down the bounty hunter Greedo, who had kidnapped members of their family.[49]
Three years after the start of the war, Skywalker fell to the dark side and joined the Sith, old adversaries of the Jedi who had long planned to take over the galaxy. The Galactic Empire, a new regime established to replace the Republic, started to hunt all Jedi. Skywalker's former master Obi-Wan Kenobi went into hiding on Tatooine, bringing the infant son of the fallen Jedi with him. On the desert expanses of Tatooine, Kenobi hoped that he could keep young Luke from his father's evil influence. Kenobi entrusted the boy[50] to Shmi's stepson,[47] Owen Lars, and his wife Beru.[50]
Time of great hardship
"It was the worst drought anyone could remember. The moisture farmers could barely gather enough water from their vaporators to keep themselves alive, let alone to trade in town for food and supplies. Especially with Jabba's thugs collecting "water taxes." Rumor was that the bloated gangster took lavish baths all throughout the day. Lest he perspire in the heat. But I didn't believe that rumor. I'd met Jabba. Jabba had never bathed in his life."
―An excerpt from The Journals of Ben Kenobi[src]
In the years following Emperor Palpatine's formation of his New Order, the Great Drought of Tatooine scorched the world's surface, impoverishing the many moisture farmers of a reliable source of income to procure food and other basic supplies. The situation was not helped by Jabba's thugs collecting "water taxes" from the many towns and isolated settlements across the planet, often resorting to threats and brute force to acquire enough water for the crime lord. With Obi-Wan Kenobi witnessing the suffering of the population, he disabled the weapons of the thugs, allowing the populace to chase them off. Later, a young Luke Skywalker attempted to confront the thugs, but was ultimately rescued by Obi-Wan after falling unconscious in a brief scuffle. With the legacy of the Jedi safe, Obi-Wan vowed never to return to town, while a week later the drought finally ended, and Jabba vowed revenge on the man who had stolen his water, to no avail.[17]
In addition, the Empire's rise prompted the Hutts to revise their oftentimes shady business schemes, resulting in a transfer of regional wealth and influence from Mos Espa to Mos Eisley, prompting the slow economic decline of Mos Espa.[4]
The final fight between Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and former Lord Sith Maul took place on the sands of the Tatooine desert.
In 2 BBY, the former Sith apprentice Maul traveled to Tatooine to hunt down his old nemesis Obi-Wan Kenobi. Unable to draw the Jedi Master out of hiding, Maul used the fragment of the Malachor Sith holocron to lure the Jedi rebel Ezra Bridger to the planet. Ezra traveled with the C1-series astromech droid Chopper to Tatooine. The two rebels were attacked by Tusken Raiders, who damaged their RZ-1T trainer. After being lost in the desert, Ezra and Chopper were rescued by Kenobi, who revealed Maul's deception. Kenobi then instructed the two rebels to return to Atollon while he defeated and fatally wounded Maul in combat. As Maul died in Kenobi's arms, Kenobi confirmed Maul's suspicions that he was hiding the Chosen One.[51]
War comes to Tatooine
"Lord Vader! It is my distinct pleasure and great honor to welcome you to Tatooine!"
―Ardo Banch, to Darth Vader[src]
Imperial sandtrooper on the streets of Mos Eisley.
Shortly after the Battle of Scarif in the Galactic Civil War, the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO landed on Tatooine's surface in an escape pod after their CR90 corvette the Tantive IV was captured by the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Devastator. With the droids carrying the technical readouts to the battle station, a task force was sent to the planet in order to capture the two droids. Upon coming in contact with a Jawa sandcrawler, the two were abducted and later sold to Owen Lars of the Lars moisture farm, with R2 being chosen after another astromech droid, R5-D4 broke down. Later that day, Luke Skywalker, unknowingly Anakin Skywalker's son came across a recorded message of Princess Leia pleading for the help of Obi-Wan Kenobi against the Galactic Empire. Intrigued, if only because R2 later ran away, forcing Luke and C-3PO to retrieve him, the two were attacked by native Tusken Raiders. Being saved by Kenobi, Skywalker learned that he was a Jedi while Kenobi offered to train him. Refusing and heading home, Skywalker came across the remains of the sandcrawler that originally sold the two droids to his family. Realizing that it was the work of Imperial forces and that they may have traced the droids back to his house, he rushed back only to find the moisture farm burned to the ground, with the charred remains of his aunt and uncle laying outside in the sun. Agreeing to go with Kenobi to Mos Eisley, they discovered the city under Imperial control and they hired the services of smuggler Han Solo and his partner, Chewbacca to transport them offworld to Alderaan. Barely escaping an intense firefight with multiple sandtroopers, the two escaped Tatooine and several Star Destroyers into hyperspace.[9]
Sometime during the Galactic Civil War, Tusken Raiders under the leadership of the Jundland General attacked local settlements. He and his followers were ultimately defeated by a gang of mercenaries located on-world.[11] Having allied with the Rebel Alliance,[52] the gang led the Rebels into a series of successful operations on Tatooine that would conclude with the defeat of the Empire's 68th Legion and Tatooine garrison.[11] Nevertheless, the Empire would come to reestablish its presence on the desert world,[53] with Lieutenant Ardo Banch serving as an officer in the garrison.[54]
Shortly after the Battle of Yavin, a shuttle with emissaries in the employ of Jabba, who were meant to negotiate a deal to provide support to the Empire at Weapons Factory Alpha on Cymoon 1, was intercepted by the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and a strike team consisting of Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Leia Organa proceeded to the factory, infiltrating and destroying it. The negotiations having failed, Darth Vader returned to Tatooine to negotiate the deal with Jabba in person. After the negotiations were complete, Vader remained on Tatooine shortly to wipe out a Tusken Raider tribe and hire the bounty hunters Boba Fett and Krrsantan to ascertain the identity of the pilot who destroyed the First Death Star.[55] Fett tracked down and dueled Skywalker, who had returned to the late Ben Kenobi's dwelling for education, learning his name and reporting to Vader.[56]
Four years later, the notorious bounty hunter Boba Fett delivered Han Solo, now frozen in carbonite, to the crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure, where he would serve as a wall decoration. Attempting to rescue Solo, the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO infiltrated Jabba's Palace disguised as servants after Luke Skywalker "gifted" them to the crime lord. Arriving at the palace not long after, Luke Skywalker attempted to bargain with Jabba for his friend's life, only to be refused and dropped into a rancor pit. After a struggle, Luke managed to kill the rancor, angering Jabba and sentencing him and Han Solo (who was freed by Leia Organa in the guise of a bounty hunter who had captured his friend, Chewbacca) to death in the Great Pit of Carkoon, while Leia became one of Jabba's many entertainers. Later, as they were about to be executed, R2-D2 fired Luke's lightsaber at him from Jabba's sail barge, allowing Luke, Han Solo and Lando Calrissian, who had been disguised as a guard, to make their escape. After an intense shootout, Leia strangled Jabba to death with the chain used to keep her hostage, and Boba Fett was knocked into the sarlacc. Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Leia Organa, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian ,and the two droids escaped the planet once more.[13] Although Fett was swallowed by the sarlacc, he survived and managed to escape the creature's stomach, though his armor was stolen by Jawas shortly thereafter due to his weakness from his escape.[31]
New days ahead
"Afraid the Republic is back and gonna put their boot down on all the lowlifes and scum-lickers, the syndicates are trying to find new ways to appear legit. And with the Hutts fighting one another for control, bunch of these quote-unquote mining companies are swooping in with brutes like your boss at the helm."
―Cobb Vanth, to Adwin Charu[src]
Cobb Vanth became enigmatic the lawman of Mos Pelgo.
Following the creasing of Imperial rule,, numerous crime syndicates attempted to build legitimacy as mining companies, with one such company, the Red Key Raiders, afraid that the New Republic would eventually stamp out their operations on the planet. These companies tried to take advantage of the power vacuum caused by the death of Jabba.[57] However Fett lived on, having only been knocked unconscious for an unknown length of time, and dug himself out of the great pit. Exahusted and suffering wounds from the enounter, collapsed, where a Jawa sandcrawler scavenged the wreckage from Jabba's sail barge, including his set of Mandalorian armor.[31] The enigmatic lawman Cobb Vanth then obtained Boba Fett's armor[53] from the Jawa sandcrawler and went on to defeat the Red Key gangster Adwin Charu.[57]
By 5 ABY,[58] Vanth had become the mayor and Sheriff of Mos Pelgo and dedicated his life to protecting the town from the Red Key Raiders. He also enlisted Jabba's former Beastmaster Malakili in helping to tame two unruly rontos and to raise the Huttlet[38] named Borgo. With Malakili's help, Cobb struck a deal with the local Tusken Raiders to protect the town in exchange for water and receiving a pearl from the stomach of a krayt dragon. This alliance proved important in repelling an attack by the Red Key syndicate led by Lorgan Movellan.[40]
In 9 ABY, the bounty hunter Din Djarin defeated a pursuing bounty hunter in a dogfight. His ship, the Razor Crest was damaged and he landed at a repair facility run by Peli Motto in Mos Eisley. While seeking work to pay for the repairs in a local cantina, he met Toro Calican, a young bounty hunter looking to join the guild by capturing Fennec Shand, a well-trained mercenary. Despite having misgivings, Djarin agreed to help him in exchange for the bounty's reward, while all other credit. Around this same time, Grogu, an infant member of Yoda's species traveling under the care of Djarin, exited the Razor Crest and attracted the attention of Peli Motto, who cared for him while repairing the ship for Djarin. Djarin and Calican then traveled into the Dune Sea on speeder bikes, looking for Shand. They came upon Tusken Raiders; Djarin bartered with them for safe passage. They eventually came across a Dewback with a dead bounty hunter attached to it, which is revealed to be bait laid out by Shand to attract anyone looking for her. The two managed to fend off Shand's attacks, but lost one of their speeder bikes in the process. Nevertheless, the pair was able to take Shand into custody.[59]
Djarin agreed to go retrieve the Dewback they encountered earlier to replace the destroyed speeder. Calican watched over Shand during this period. While alone, Shand told him that Mando was a traitor to the guild and that the bounty on him was worth a great deal more than her bounty. Calican was unconcerned with the bounty, but Shand pointed out that taking out a Mandalorian would make him a legend. She then offered to help Calican capture the Mandalorian if he set her free. However, Calican instead shot her, assuming that she would betray him, and then headed to the repair facility on the speeder bike, where he took Motto and Grogu hostage. Shortly thereafter, Djarin arrived and used a flash grenade to disorient Calican, using the opportunity to kill him. Mando then gave Calican's money to Motto to pay for the repairs on his ship. He and Grogu then left Tatooine.[59]
Djarin, through a lead given by Gor Koresh, would later return to Tatooine in search of other Mandalorians in his quest to find a Jedi. Upon his return, in place of another Mandalorian, he was instead met by the lawman Cobb Vanth donning Boba Fett's armor. After a tumultuous start, the two became allies and worked together to unite the local citizens of Mos Pelgo and nearby Tusken Raiders to liberate all from the terror of a sixteen-limbed krayt dragon. During this time, the bounty hunter Boba Fett began to track Din Djarin, watching him from a distance in the Tatooine desert.[53] Joined by Shand, whose life he had saved after Calican shot her, Fett eventually regained his armor after following Djarin to the planet Tython.[60]
Rule with respect

Boba Fett takes control of Jabba's Palace, becoming the new crime lord.
Eventually, Fett returned to Tatooine accompanied by Shand and took over Jabba's Palace and the criminal empire that once belonged to the Hutt[31] after killing Bib Fortuna.[61] Some time later, Fett was attacked and was injured by the Order of the Night Wind, which was later revealed to have been sent by Jabba's cousins, the Twins, who wanted to acquire the territory that formerly belonged to their deceased cousin.[41]
The Twins sent Krrsantan to kill Lord Fett at his palace. After Krrsantan's failure and capture, they arrived to apologize to Fett and offer him a rancor as tribute. They also announced their departure from Tatooine, as they've been informed that Jabba's former holdings have actually been promised to the Pyke Syndicate by Mayor Mok Shaiz, and they had no interest in starting a war over a "worthless rock".[46] With a war with the Pyke Syndicate on the horizon, Fett began assembling an army, recruiting even Krrsantan despite his attempt on his life[62] and Djarin.[63] Although Krrsantan and Djarin joined the fight against the Pykes, Fett still needed a infantry as the Pykes outnumbered them. Djarin offered to help with this. He went to Freetown, the town formerly known as Mos Pelgo, to enlist the help of his acquaintance, Sheriff Cobb Vanth. Djarin asked that he and the townspeople join Fett, saying that the Pykes' influence would inevitably reach the town as well. Though Djarin didn't know it, Vanth had already faced the Pykes when he saw them trading spices in the city's territory. However, Vanth initially saw no reason for people to join the fight, as he thought the Pykes wouldn't mind Freetown, at least not with him around. Djarin left, but Vanth said he'd think about it. Shortly after Djarin's departure, Vanth decided to recruit those in the city who were willing to fight. At this time, the famous bounty hunter Cad Bane, who was in the employ of the Pykes, arrived in the city. Bane had gone to deal with Vanth for his meddling in syndicate affairs. After a brief conversation and Vanth refusing to let the Pykes continue with the spice trade in the city, Bane wounded Vanth and killed his assistant before clearing things up for the citizens and departing.[16] After a battle in the streets of Mos Espa, which led to Bane's death at the hands of Fett, many damages in the city and many losses to the Pykes, the syndicate withdrew from incorporating Tatooine into their territory.[64]
