8 December 2020 (evening)
There is a knock at the lobby door - it is Morty and Mikaila, who say they have someone at the “lineup” area, which they have created, and who wants to see us. Anton tells them to go and bring the visitor to the door.
The woman is about 5”7” with bottle-orange hair under a grey beret and wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt and cargo pants. She introduces herself, rather impolitely and with much unnecessary vulgarity, as “Rebel”. Anton reluctantly invites her in with a pointed suggestion that she watch her language and manners and get to the point of why she’s here.
Rebel says she’s part of a “little” organisation and is an “anarch” and asks if we have ever heard of one. A little birdy told her we were heading north into the anarch state of the Gold Coast and that we might be amenable to a little mischief. All she is asking is that we take a good squizz at the government up there and, when we get back, there might be a seat at the table, with the implication being that this is their “table” and outside the Camarilla.
When Anton says he would like to know more about this so-called “little birdy” that apparently knows so much, Rebel replies that a good journalist never reveals their source. We can drop by the bar and get to know her and her colleagues, but she asks that we approach our foray into the Gold Coast with an open mind. Anton suggests we’ll keep that in mind and watches her leave.
Anton asks Malady what she knows about anarachs, and is told they are all for themselves and not “for the team”. When Larissa returns, Anton briefs her on the meeting and suggests that we are better remaining loyal to the Camarilla, maintaining his core principle that success is derived from strong leadership and a clear hierarchy of authority.
Anton receives a call that the goods are ready to travel and summons his car service to take them down to the docks, where Fredo has assembled the convoy and security force. It takes us about half an hour to get to the drop-off point, where we see Ray waiting for us. He opens his climate-controlled storage unit and subsequently spends about an hour investigating the paintings while Malady chats away, presumably attempting to maintain a mild distraction but ultimately distracting him so much he pierces one of the paintings.
As Ray challenges Malady for causing him to damage the painting, Anton steps up and clouds his memory, then accuses him of deliberately damaging the goods which, given he has the knife in hand, seems likely. Anton claims his patience is exhausted and they need to conclude the transaction now. Ray says that he can only offer $5 million, which does not go over well with Anton, although he agrees to discount the goods to $20m in acknowledgement of them being unframed. There is some protracted bargaining for a minute but, when Ray will not budge from $12m to get to Anton’s final offer of $15m, Anton daunts him into accepting the offer.
We leave with two cases containing $15m in cash, and Anton discusses with Fredo how he wants to allocate the money: we will keep $1m as cash at hand, allocate $1m for bonuses to the crew and to fund payroll for a while, and $13m to be laundered at about 25% cut to leave about $10m to be invested. Anton asks Fredo to liaise with Kinsley to secure an investment planner and set up a legitimate portfolio.
