Session 16 - 6/19/2020

General Summary

Huren (the 9th month) 22-28 and The Calm Festival 1-8, 1610 - 2 Weeks of Downtime

To allow the settlement to "advance a bit", the PCs are given two weeks of downtime. A number of things happen during the downtime:
  • Sigmund Vaylen, III - consults with Teddy about going to the swamp and Teddy expresses caution. Sigmund then travels to the swamp where he barters with Bitrella the old swamp woman. He is told the Kelmonites were hunted to extinction by the Cyrlok. She hints that was a race here maybe before the Kelmonites. He is given a leech that gives him some boons and some busts in exchange for being Bitrella's eyes and ears. He then camps about the ruins of Telmyr and learns its general layout and were some key features potential dangers are.
  • Shadow - During his first week he helps train the militia (and others) on stealth, tracking and other scouting type skills. In the second week Shadow works with Davick who exhibits some ability to work magic.
  • Egon Spenglyr spends a week under the tutelage of Ansala Bower and he learns to scavenge and hunt for food in the local environs - Ansala shares with Egon something she's discovered: things on Alpha subtly "change" and flow on an almost daily basis. In the second week, he dives deep into the Kelmonite materials he has collected thus far and learns broken Kelmonite. He also is hit on by Chelminda (the jealous dancer). He flirts with her but in the end, he tries to end it... however she does not take it well and threatens to "tell Ansala" if he just insists on "ending it".. we'll have to see how this plays out.
  • Teddy Blackbird spends the first week recuperating and working with Linden Carmichael on the "books". Linden finds all kinds of things Teddy though were well hidden and has even more ideas on how they could be hidden better. In the second week, he applies his consulting skills and helps several of the town's fledgling businesses optimize. Teddy fosters some partnerships between businesses (such as the Three Brewers and Blackbrow and Span's) where they share space or combine efforts to help each other out. While Teddy is minimizing the private sector expenses he is cutting into the Dadelo Banmeki's business of loaning money. The two have it out in a heated argument (Teddy is calmer), but Dadelo is incensed and it seems the matter is not fully resolved. Teddy also spends some time with Anicia Vandercreft.
  • Gernard Shurehilt of Clan Bromhewer (M, Torogon Dwarf) - a weapons and armor merchant comes to do business in the settlement. He brings news of other settlements surviving but struggling with unique challenges of their own. The bulk of one settlement's cattle mysteriously died en-mass.
  • Idina Bellweather arranges a private lunch with Teddy Blackbird. They discuss and she becomes ingrained in his consultancy work (she desperately wants the town to prosper and quickly so that her life can get "back to normal"). They discuss the matter of Dadelo Banmeki and Idina vows to squash his outrage by investigating his business practices.
  • Quincy Delatain obtained ship parts from the arriving Gernard Shurehilt to hopefully repair the Quark. He enlists Lee Spans, Janadine Travis and Jagbar to get his ship flying again. The PCs take an interest in lending their skills in this matter - the settle on 200gp each (4 PCs) and 2% of gross sales on Alpha (3% if they run Jagbar off the job - which they do with a 50gp payoff provided by Quincy)
  • Jargon Burley, Isenphie, Bera and Beodda have success in bringing felled trees to the saw yard and are instrumental in helping the town's building efforts.
  • Sarachael - invites everybody but Sigmund (who prepared a great presentation) to speak to the children at the new school program.
  • The Colonial Marines who were requested by Bellweather arrive and set up a post (see below)
  • The militia is also bolstered by the archery contestants
  • The town "grows" (see below)
  • On the last day of the month (a full moon) lights all over the horizon are seen shining up into the night sky for about 2-3 hours. Sigmund who happened to be near the Beast-men area saw the beast-men "herd" growing in size... they brayed, howled, and growled in unison while facing this light... at its climax, a burst of light washed over the "herd" and Sigmund observed the beast-men became ever so slightly less mixed up in their hodge-podge physicality - there also seemed to be an entity or a figure in the light - but only for a moment. After the event, the beast-men wander off and Sigmund moves to find the "source" of the light - what he finds is an "alter" or a stone of sorts and it bears the same symbol as the Circular Charcoal Rubbing! Sigmund casts Shillelagh and a great oak tree springs up instead (a repeated effort the next day does not repeat this wonder, but the great tree remains).
When the PC reunite much information is shared. There is a good bit of discussion around the lights and the Beast-men. Sigmund has a theory that the light comes from deeper inside Alpha. Egon can't confirm or deny this from his studies of the Kelmonite literature, but he does recall that in the history scrolls (from the Kelmonite burial mound) there is mention of a "hero" who found a "man-made descent" deeper into Alpha, but this came shortly before the Cyrlok attack which then seemed to dominate all history and no other mention of th descent is found.   At the end of downtime, the PCs set out with Lee Spans and Janadine Travis and a wagon load of parts. As they reach the treeline wherein lies the downed Quark they spot a small band of lowly kobolds napping therein. They are run down quickly and without much trouble.   As the PCs arrive at the Quark the engage some much beefier Kobolds who put up a good fight but are also dispatched.
