Corps
The Corporations (for short: Corps) are giant, trans system companies which dominate the life in the The Triumvirate. They can range from simple mining conglomerates to fully vertically integrated industrial complexes. The corps in this world are often seen as an equivalent to nations. Many people live their entire lives in the shadow of a single cooperation that happens to own the particular place they end up living. These corporations also interact with each other like nations - they make treaties, have diplomatic relations, and wage war.
While it is generally agreed that corporations increase the overall standard of living for the people, these benefits are in no way evenly distributed. Most of the generated wealth is funneled into a corporate elite that lives extravagant lifestyles almost wholly detached from the reality of everyday people.
In recent history, their sovereignty has taken a heavy hit. As a result of the The Great Pirate War the Clockwork Gnomes manages to accrued a lot of control over various Corps and found the Clockwork Federation. This government entity has, for the first time in remembered history, enacted rules and limitations on the behavior and power of the Corps. While the corporate elite certainly bemoans those harsh restrictions and spends vast resources to circumvent them - most average people would describe those rules as "common sense" and "bare minimum".
Corps are oposed by the Pirates and their ideals. Though most people are living somewhere on the spectrum between the stability provided by the Corps and the yearning for freedom embodied by the Pirates.
