Aethos

The western & largest continent in Aernoch. Aethos has areas that are densely populated with a wide variety of races & cultures, though humans are the most common people of the land. Virtue of its size, it holds many great natural resources and is currently divided into 19 surface countries or regions - 7 Human, 7 Elven, 3 Dwarven, 1 Narylin, and 1 unclaimed.

The Seven Human Countries of Aethos

  • Garyk - The wealthiest of the seven kingdoms. Keeps a constant eye on the movements of Vraythr as it safeguards the Realm of Humans.
  • Pyne - With a constant trade route to the Celestial Coast, this country has solidified itself as one of the wealthiest countries. It's dominance on the seas is well known.
  • Estren - The western portion of what was once Estraini now sits bitter & jealous of what it once had.
  • Rainima - Officially called The People's Republic of Rainima, was once combined with Estren to make Estraini, and is now a democratic country with elected officials. After the fall of the four provinces, it is currently the only human country in Aethos that isn't a monarchy.
  • Mayvin - Once stretched from coast to coast, but lost half of its land in a revolt of its people. Its economy has never fully recovered. Its people are primarily maritime traders and fishermen. While it has a monarch, there is little respect by its people in its leadership.
  • Praugn - Was once one of The Five Provinces that revolted against Mayvin and split away. The Five included Aspiren, Noffgun, Hambur, Jerrin, and Praugn. A hostile regime took power in Praugn and conquered the other four provinces, creating the Praugn Empire. Additionally, Praugn took a portion of Lithos from the Elves, and now surrounds Lithos's forest.
  • Yemisyrl - It is the largest country in Aethos, though most of its land is covered in desert. Boasts of its own greatness while none of the other human countries takes it seriously.

The Seven Elven Kingdoms of Aethos

  • Mondorlyan - the sole kingdom of High Elves on Aethos. Considers itself as the center of elfdom in Aethos.
  • Ansari - A very open Wood Elf Kingdom that is friendly to travelers. Its openess is frowned upon by other elven kingdoms, especially Mondorlyan. The largest academy of Arcana is located here.
  • Torsari - Generally thought of as the Wood Elf Kingdom with the best artisans & artists.
  • Lithos - Its boundry had stretched to the mountains shared with Mondorlyan, but Praugn recently & unexpectedly pushed the Wood Elves back to their forest domain.
  • Nethaar - Wood Elf Kingdom that is unfriendly to outsiders, which typically causes most travelers & land shipments between Pyne & Ráinima to go the long way around the Nethaar Wilds instead of going through them.
  • Harailin - Friendly, though secluded on its penninsula in the north. It is known as the location where Evermead is made.
  • Ornathrad - This Wood Elf Kingdom is very standoffish and isn't even very friendly to other elves. Considered the closest thing to what a civilized kingdom of Wild Elves would be like.

The Three Dwarven Kingdoms of Aethos

  • Odrormond - Location of what is also referred to as "The City of Kings." It also has the largest surface area that is not mountains for surface dwelling Hill Dwarves.
  • Dürandür - A vast Dwarven Kingdom that mines various types of precious metals. Its surface entrance faces the largest mountain in Aethos.
  • Zilvren - The only surviving Dwarven Kingdom that was began from the surface to within the mountains. It is home to Zilvren City (aka Silver City) as one of its largest exports is silver.

The Remaining Surface Regions of Aethos

  • Vraythr - Also referred to as "The Darklands" as sunlight is rare in this section of the world. Home of the Vraythr Dynasty, a matriarchal society of the Narylin, the last surface dwelling Dark Elf kingdom in Aernoch. However, it is assumed that its reach is vast within the Undereach. Many other evil creatures roam the Valley of the Crescent Moon.
  • The Wilds - An untamed wild land full of wonders, horrors, and Wild Elves.

The Aethos Empire

The human countries of Aethos was recently made up of only 5 countries, four of which were a part of The Aethos Empire, Mayvin, Pyne, Estraini, and Garyk. Yemisyrl remained independent. Mayvin was the seat of power for the Empire and home to the Emperor. The other countries had Lords, Ladies, Dukes, and Dutchesses to lead them under the Imperial Banner.   Emperor Nevell Lamont Mayvin made a string of rash choices at the end of his life that began to break the stability of the empire and alienated his own people. One of these choices was to break a pledge of marriage between Pyne & Mayvin, instead entering a marriage pact with a family in Mornetharin. This was viewed as a major insult to Pyne. When his son came into power, the Empire was already fragile, which didn't bode well for the young headstrong Nevell Lamont Mayvin II. A well respected sea captain from Pyne refused to alter a contract of transportation of goods after the Emperor made a sudden special request. Most of the people of Aethos believed the captain was still in the right as he was honoring a contractual agreement. The Emperor had the captain beheaded for treason. With tensions already high with Pyne, this was the final straw for its Duke, which then seceded from the Empire. Garyk soon followed as Mayvin was abusing its access to its raw materials.   Estraini remained under the banner for a time longer, though many questioned why it was dragging out its decision as it appeared obvious that the Empire was collapsing. To augment the losses of wealth and supply from Garyk & Pyne, the Emperor began making harsher demands on the people of Mayvin. This also reached a tipping point that saw Mayvin's own people begin to revolt against the Empire. The Emperor called out to Estraini to help fight the open revolt, but Estraini didn't answer the call. The result was Mayvin breaking into 6 separate pieces, Mayvin proper and The Five Provinces of Aethos. Estraini then declared its independence.
