Sezani (se-ZAH-nee)

Sezani stands proudly on the cliffs of Eumoya, a breathtaking city that both captivates the eye and fuels the heartbeat of trade on the continent. With a sprawling airship port, it's the lifeblood of commerce and culture.

Often called the Gem City, it has a tiered, sprawling structure. It's on the small side compared to some other cities on the Rimland, but the largest on Eumoya and bustling with merchants and travelers. The first thing of note is the sheer amount of green - nearly as much green as there is sandy stone and complimentary lapis mosaic work. The aqueduct-lined steps divide the traffic and neighborhoods of the city.

Renowned for its beauty, Sezani is filled with exotic goods, fountains, and fresh mountain spring water.   With its unique charm, vibrant markets, and stunning architecture, it is truly a gem of a city.

Demographics

Primarily inhabited by humans, elves, halflings, and dwarves. There are small neighborhoods of tieflings and half-orcs. There's a much more diverse group in the Aetherium Collegium, and in the dock ward.

Government

Sezani is run by guilds, each sending representatives to weekly meetings at the Guild Alliance Hall to discuss city affairs. They make up the Sezani Guild Alliance.

Defences

There's a curved wall on the western to the northern sides of the city, the east side of the city is pressed into a large mountain, the south end tapers off into the docks.

The Western Gates: Staffed by the (farm guild), and secured by the Crimson. It's a bustling gate, as it leads to farming towns, primarily inhabited by halflings and humans. There's a great deal of food and livestock entering the city through these gates. There's neighborhoods as well as the Crimson training grounds outside these gates.

North Gate: Protected by the Crimson, this is a large gate that leads North and whose road merges with the North Road, which leads to the few fishing towns along a river and the lake. There is primarily farmland down the North Path, and produce is often brought through these gates.

The Azure Gate: Divides into the North Road and the Azure Road. Just outside the gates is a spread of warehouses used by the Arboreal Guild and the mining guilds, as well as some neighborhoods.

The Zinras Gate: South of the Western Gates, with much less foot-traffic and much more trade. It's the most direct route to the Dock Ward.
There's The Crimson Guild, who mostly make sure that the guilds are safe, and the general population is in line. They man the towers and gates. They have The Dock Guard and the Skywardens underneath their jurisdiction.

The Crimson will issue and pay off bounties to help keep the peace, as well. They will post jobs for mercenaries for any issue of concern in the outlying towns.

Industry & Trade

Sezani boasts the only significant airship port on the continent, making it a hub for trade.

Lapis lazuli, in particular, is a sought-after export, allowing for affordable and stunning blue mosaic works. Due to the local silver and gold mines, there's also a good deal of jewelry exported.

There is a great deal of trade, and this is a good tax system that keeps the city in good standing. There are docking fees taken by the harbormaster, import taxes on merchants, and regular taxes on shopkeepers. All of this keeps the infrastructure afloat.

Infrastructure

The entire city has flowing aqueducts and a network of fountains that are fed by the cascading mountain spring water from the east.

There's a sewer system, clean enclosed piping for the public fountains and open pipes and chambers that are filtered just before they lead off the edge.

There's a guild that handles the infrastructure - sewers, aqueducts, building code, and roads.

Districts

The districts are mainly separated by the levels of the city and the steps. The lowest section has the dock ward, which is very safe as they're patrolled by The Crimson Guild.

There's small towers spread about the city that are staffed by the Crimson and divide the wards, with some checkpoints - like around the college, warehouses, and wealthier areas.

History

The history of Sezani stretches back over three millennia, yet much of its ancient past remains shrouded in mystery and obscured by the ravages of time. The city's origins are lost to the annals of history, with scant records surviving from the era predating the Hundred-Year War.   The Hundred-Year War, a cataclysmic conflict of ancient times, brought devastation to Sezani, leaving much of the city in ruins. The once-great metropolis lay abandoned and forgotten for generations, until survivors of the war began to settle amidst its crumbling edifices. These resilient pioneers forged a new existence amidst the remnants of the old city, laying the foundations for what would become modern-day Sezani.   In the aftermath of the war, a monarchy emerged, its rulers guiding the city through centuries of tumult and change. Successive generations of monarchs presided over Sezani, their reigns marked by periods of prosperity, strife, and cultural flourishing. However, the monarchy eventually succumbed to internal strife and external pressures, leading to its overthrow and the rise of a new governing structure: the Guild Alliance.   The Guild Alliance, a coalition of influential guilds representing various trades and professions, assumed control of Sezani, ushering in a new era of governance characterized by cooperation and collective decision-making. Under the auspices of the Guild Alliance, Sezani prospered as a center of trade, culture, and innovation, attracting scholars, artisans, and adventurers from across the realm.   One of the city's most venerable institutions, the Collegium Aetherium, traces its origins back over a millennium. Founded as a bastion of arcane knowledge and learning, the Collegium has served as a crucible for generations of wizards, sorcerers, and scholars, fostering the pursuit of magical wisdom and understanding.   Alongside the Collegium, the Bardic College of Lore emerged as a beacon of artistic expression and intellectual inquiry. Established in tandem with the House of Knowledge, which would later evolve into the Lorekeeper's Guild, the Bardic College cultivated a rich tradition of storytelling, music, and performance, enriching the cultural tapestry of Sezani.   Beyond the city limits, Sezani shares a storied history with Ushmaru Khuz, the ancient dwarven city situated to the northwest. Linked by trade routes and shared heritage, Sezani and Ushmaru Khuz have maintained a longstanding relationship, exchanging goods, knowledge, and mutual respect across the ages.   Despite the passage of millennia and the vicissitudes of history, Sezani endures as a vibrant and resilient bastion of civilization, its past woven into the fabric of its present, and its future beckoning with promise and possibility.
