Cairn Ringil

Cairn Ringil is a set of ancient standing stones atop a small hill located in the Glen Conon region of the Trotternish Peninsula.    The stones pre-date the Kingdom of Albion and are over 5000 years old. Despite their age, the stones themselves have survived, albeit weathered and marked.    The stones are carved gneiss. The large stones are a mixed grey and white mix of feldspar, quartz and mica. The colors have faded from their original brightness and now show as much mossy green as original grey and white.   The standing stones are some 18-20 feet tall from ground level. Height of the stones varies due to weathering and shifting of soil levels below the ring.

Geography

Cairn Ringil can be found in the southeastern upper hills of the Glen Conon mountains. The hill itself rises some 100 ft in total and is surrounded by other lower hills of the area.

Ecosystem

Cairn Ringil experiences the cooler temps of the mountain region where it is located. During the colder months the ring can often be covered in snow and/or ice.

History

The ring of large stones known as Cairn Ringil is older than recorded modern memory (some 3000 years). The stones are perhaps 5000 years.    No one knows who built the ring or the original purpose. The area has served as the site of various rituals of both good and evil intentions over the five millennia since it was constructed. More recently Cairn Ringil has seen an uptick in activity. Locals aand have always avoided) the area lest they get caught up in some undesirable situation.
