the Land of Mist
the Lost Continent
The Land of Mist (sometimes spelled Myst), also known as the Island of Mist, or the Continent of Mist, the Forgotten Land, and the Forgotten Continent, is a large land formation both considered a part of the Western Reach of Ethae, and sperate from it. The Land of Mist is cut off from Anbar by the great canyon known as the Even Flow. A canyon so deep and wide the ocean flows through it from one side to the other. The Even Flow has created debate among scholars on whether Anbar ends at the Flow or if the Land of Mist is considered part of Anbar, or a continent of it is a continent in its own right. Others argue a lack of caring, for it is a land best forgotten.
The Land of Mist is a region island of rocky deserts and twisted mountains. If accounts are to be believed it once was covered in the same ancient forests as Anbar was. No name is given to this forest, and it is unanimously considered to have been an extension of Karasaanu, the Great Forest of the West. Its name comes, not from any mist or fog that lingers in the land, but the smoke and ash of Dragonfall, when Karasaanu burned. Many epic tales, told of the Heroic Era during the Kephic Age, tell of famous heroes venturing into a land still covered in the aftermath of Dragonfall. If true, that means the smoke of Dragonfall lingered over the Land of Mist for centuries after the event, up to at least the time of the Black Collapse. After, during the late Valmon Age and early Lakorthian Age, the Land of Mist's southern coasters were often covered in great dust storms of ash, blown down, not only for its own lands, but the Desert of Anbar, across the Even Flow as well. It is these grey storms, seen by sailors that give the land its name, from frightened sailors and the eerie grey storms they encountered.
The ash storms are past into history, but the land is no less foreboding. the Shadow thrives in the Land of Mist. Here it is at its strongest. It is a land that touches Etu Enur more than anywhere else in Aldern. Those scholars studying Shadowfell travel here to seek out one of the hundreds of pockets of Shadowfell that exist in the interior of the land. But they should never travel ungaurded, for it is in the Land of Mist that Etu Enur can touch back. Dark creatures of shadow stalk the land, hazy monsters both in Etu Enur and Aldern at the same time, prey on those venturing through their valleys and crags. They feats of the souls of those they hunt, leaving a corpse that lives on, neither living nor dead.
While several small nations have formed on the relatively save southern coast in recent centuries, it is a land best forgotten.
