Anden Kingdom

The Anden Kingdom controls most of the human populated section of Anglence. Founded by a revolution in 50 BCE in central Anglence, the kingdom took advantage of the power gap left after the Disappearance of the Dragon Riders and expanded massively. Life in the kingdom for most, while not the best, is a far cry from absolute tyranny and oppression. However, that can not be said for non-humans, who the government systematically oppresses and takes advantage of. While the majority of the population of the kingdom is regular humans, there are a number of half elves, half orcs, and haflings, who generally stay on the edges of society.

Structure

The Anden Kingdom is ruled by a king, who is advised by a council of Elders. Below the council, there are a large number of Lords, who each have many Knights, and Lesser Lords who also have their own Knights. Each Lord has lordship over one area of the kingdom, and administers the areas for the king. Below are the lesser lords, mainly earls and dukes, who control even smaller areas of land, down to just one city, or even a part of a large city.

Culture

Because of the size of the kingdom, many different cultures are represented. These range from the more traditional groups in the east, to more progresive ones in the middle, and to more exodic and progressive in the west.

Public Agenda

While the full agenda of the king is unknown to the citizens, the general policy is to maintain the peace and prosperity of the kingdom. This is, however, undercut by their open oppression of other species and labeling of the unconquered people in the north west as “barbarians”.

Assets

Because of its size, the kingdom operates massive numbers of forts, castles, and bastions across its territory. It also has significant stores of supplies and gear to outfit a massive army, much of witch is a relic of its days of conquest. The kingdom also has large amounts of money, primarily from taxation of trade. While a large portion of its wealth goes towards the nobility, some of it does go to maintain facilities for its citizens, such as roadways and local defensive structures.

History

Founded following a revolution in 50 BCE in central Anglence against a dictator, the Anden Kingdom was initially fairly peaceful and working for the good of its citizens. However, following the Disappearance of the Dragon Riders, the King decided to conquer the majority of the continent. By around 15 CE the Anden Kingdom controlled most of Anglence except for the Veldmathi area in the south and the Arablat area in the north east. Following the conquest, the kingdom has become fairly stable and peaceful, although forays by “barbarians” in the north west still occur at least once per year on both sides of the mountains.

Demography and Population

While its borders do extend on either side of the mountains, very few people actually live in or near them. Most of the population is collected on the coast line at rivers, with some spreading up the rivers. In some areas, there are farmers on the plains between rivers, but even there, they are few and far between. The one major exception to this is the city of Alosa, built around a natural spring, its defensive position was more important than the ability to move goods to and from it. Within the borders of the kingdom, there are approximately eight million people, however, no accurate census has ever been done, so this number is likely highly inaccurate. Unlike older kingdoms, the population is not concentrated in Mosgan, but is instead concentrated around 4 major cities, Fenfi Nutru, Loreva Jord, Alosa, and [north city]. Each of these cities acts as governmental and trade hub for the area. Due to this there are 4 major regions to the kingdom, Mosgan, Nortgan, Wotgan, and Suutgan, with Suutgan having the least population.

Territories

The Anded kingdom controls a large swath of Anglence, ranging from Alosa in the west, to ___ in the east. The port city of ___ to the south of the mountains to near the Veldmathi city of [capital] defines the borders of the kingdom to the south.

Military

While the current size of the standing army is small compared to the days of continental conquest, the Anden Kingdom maintains one of the largest standing armies in recent history, partially due to its sheer size. Much of the standing army is made up of ordinary citizens serving a 2-6 year required enlistment, the army does have several more dedicated and highly trained units built up of soldiers who have been training for 10 plus years. The kingdom also maintains a good sized armada of ships that protect shipping lanes and port cities from pirates and harasses “barbarians” on the north western coasts. In total, the standing army and navy has 50 thousand men in any given year. These men are supported by roughly 15 thousand women serving as cooks, nurses, and comforters.

Foreign Relations

The only groups witch the Anden kingdom regularly has contact with are the human city-states in the north east, and most of this is limited to trade for exotic foods. On occasion, the kingdom will trade with the Arablat, however they usually cover it up as best as possible. They will almost never interact with, or even talk about, the Veldmathi. In general, the kingdom does not accept the groups in the north west as people worthy of interaction, and claim that they are “barbarians”.

Agriculture & Industry

Agriculture:

Because of its size, the kingdom has most types of agriculture present on Anglence, with the exception of some of the more tropical fruits and fish, as they are found primarily north of territories controlled by the kingdom.

Industry:

Across the kingdom, most of the tools, equipment, and transportation, is constructed from metals mined in the mountains, and wood from the forests within its borders. The only imported equipment is Arablat made mining equipment for working really deep, or under rivers.

Education

In general, there is no centralized, or regulated education system, except in the military. This results in most people being uneducated. However, over 75% of the population can read as a result of their service in the military. This means that, while formal education is lacking, most people can self educate in at least the basics.

Infrastructure

The primary infrastructure that the kingdom mountains is in defencive structures, and the network of roads that connect major cities. In addition, the kingdom maintains a network of horse switching stations for messengers, both official, and part of the Messenger’s Guild.
