Council of 10 Guilds
The 10 Guilds of Alagria were a relatively late development in the country's history, during a period of increased trade and diplomacy with their western neighbours Milagon the merchants of Barada were impressed by the guilds they saw in Paragan, not least The Spicers.
Over time however, the Guilds evolved into a group of political entities with incredible clout, eventually becoming the de facto local government Alagria's cities in the form of the Council of 10 Guilds. Although the Guilds hold great sway, they still sit beneath the Council of 3 Disciplines and are required to serve the ultimate authority of the Great Shovrhan of Alagria.
Each Guild covers a different area of city administration and has a different name and crest to differentiate them from each other. The naming convention in Alagria is to refer to each body as “the Guild ”, for example, “the Guild Hifar”. While the The Obfuscati are principally responsible for religious organisation within Barada, each Guild tends to have an affinity for a given deity and sponsor some degree of worship as part of their operations.
Guild Structure
Each guild is organised with the following hierarchy:
- Guild Master
- Chief
- Foreman
- Adept
- Journeyman
- Member
- Apprentice
Titling
All public servants operating within Barada (i.e. everyone who operates in a function overseen by either the 3 Disciplines or the 10 Guilds) is given a title, which is quoted between their job title and their name. Titles take the form of adjectives describing a given, perceived trait of the individual. Titles are often changed during a public servant’s working lifetime to reflect their growing skill within their profession, or a change in their circumstances. Titling is carried out by the Guild Muhami, who also maintain a record of all titles ever given.
Employees of the city who engage in criminal, improper or significantly poor work can have their title changed to a negative term as punishment. Such individuals often leave the workforce (or are sent to prison) but it is possible to continue working under that title, and if they do so for three years without further incident, they can receive a new one. Such an act is generally looked upon favourably by the people of Barada as it demonstrates ownership of one’s own mistakes.
