Planar Theory 101

General Summary

When the party awoke in the Five Brothers Inn, they were greeted downstairs by a beggar who had seen them last night. He said his son, a member of the city guard, had been part of a squad that was killed while attempting to dispatch a goblin cave about a mile outside of town. The old man asked the party to retrieve his son's sword from the cave, as that was all he had left of his family. The party said they would look into it, before heading into town to resupply on healing potions. In the market, Precision bumped into Harold Merchantel, who seemed to be hastily packing up shop. He told her that he had learned that the 450GP debt he borrowed had increased to 3000GP for delinquency, and was packing up shop before either the Tracery came to collect or the townspeople realized the basilisk oil he sold was not as effective as advertised. At Precision's questioning, Harold informed her that the Tracery was a criminal syndicate that had been quickly gaining power across the Roping Coast. He urged her not to get involved with them, and before leaving gave her a few potions he had stored up for emergencies.   The party continued onwards to the margrave's manor. Inside they met with Anton Thornsby who was accompanied by Intercessor Draven Gnash. Draven recognized the party and urged the margrave to arrest them for illicit use of magic and attacking him on Kassoth, revealing Precision to be a former adjutant of the Eloqui Order. The margrave said that the Eloqui did not have jurisdiction over civil matters in Roselawn and refused to arrest the party after their help the night before, upon which Draven angrily stormed out. Margrave Thornsby thanked the party for their help and debriefed them. He said that the city guard's investigation proved that the cave-in was caused when a few students from the Roselawn Academy, attempting to gain extra credit, led an unapproved excavation into a section of the ruins that had been structurally compromised from the tunneling of a creature known as an umber hulk. The margrave thanked the party for defeating the umber hulk, as if it got loose into the city it could have killed dozens before it was taken out, and rewarded the party with 500GP. Lethe convinced the margrave to give them a tour of the manor, during which he cased it for possible entrances through which to steal the painting for Filster. He also noticed a note the margrave had written to inform fellow cultists that "another ritual" would take place that evening.   On their way out of the manor the party met Maximilian Miralos, the head of archaeology at the Roselawn Academy. As a scholar of magical academia he invited the party to speak with him in his office at their convenience, hoping to learn from each other as it was rare to be able to speak with a magical practitioner not associated with the Eloqui or the Pontificate. Later that day the party met with him at the Academy, where they learned a good deal about the nature of magic, the Weave, and the Planespires. Most importantly, they realized that their mission to destroy the arcaltium obelisks that they were given by Garen of Font-Pelier would entail travel across several planes of existence.   The party then headed back to the Five Brothers Inn for a time where they were handed a note from Ra'zik, telling the party he has decided to go ahead with the assassination plan and offering them 2000GP if they handled it themselves. Shortly after nightfall, the party headed to the margrave's manor. Sneaking over the fence into the manor grounds, they observed as a number of individuals were allowed through the gate only to enter a small cellar door behind the manor. The party snuck inside the manor itself, and upon finding it empty used the opportunity to steal the Whitesea painting for Filster. After dispatching it along with Pancake to his pocket dimension, they snuck back out and entered the cellar door.   On the other side of the door they found themselves in a wine cellar, but soon discovered a secret passage that led them deep down into a section of the Volarian ruins until they approached a locked door. On the other side of the door they could hear faint chanting, but before they risked going through Lethe managed to discover a passage into a side chamber. As the party entered this cavern, they heard scuttling sounds and found themselves face-to-face with a fearsome spider-like creature that immediately attacked them.
