Part 1. Explorer Amelia Leaves the Dome

Optimistic explorer and novel protagonist, Amelia, embarks on a life-changing adventure to discover unknown lands and share new knowledge about the world outside with the Dome Community.
Backdrop
The story begins in an isolated domed city. For generations, the Dome Community has relied heavily on technology to keep them away from nature and the world outside. This led to a somewhat regression in knowledge. The Explorers' Guild was set up to rebuild the knowledge of their past. This story tells of their most ambitious venture to date. A solo mission to go beyond what could be seen from inside the Dome. The mission is led by the first fully trained Explorer: Amelia.Summary
Amelia’s survival suit hung over the wardrobe an arm's reach away from her sleeping pod. Her kit-bag, packed and ready, lay on the floor underneath. Today she would venture to where no one had been since the Beginning when the Founders built the Dome as a shelter from the toxic earth.
Today Was The Day
Amelia wakes in her apartment, excited for her upcoming adventure. She checks her survival suit and kit-bag to make sure she has everything she needs. Amelia's Apartment is a small but spacious enough room inside the domed city. It contains a soundproof sleeping pod, a wardrobe and a plush chair. Along with Amelia's surivival suit, her kit-bag and a box of her possessions which include a shell and the Atlas.Whilst Amelia is getting ready, her neighbours and friends come to visit her before she leaves. A concerned neighbour offers her advice but unintentionally makes Amelia worried about the unknown dangers she will face on her trip. The neighbour is worried that Amelia will go missing like a friend of her's did a few years prior.
As Amelia contemplates the blank edges of her map, her childhood friend notices her distress. He builds back her confidence by reminding her of the times they spend by The Dome Edge together, dreaming about adventuring beyond.
Amelia pulled a map from her kit-bag and pressed the screen to open it. The known earth projected from the screen, showing a scaled representation of the world. The holographic lines rippled as her fingers trailed over the blank spaces at the edge.
With renewed determination, Amelia sets off across the City Centre. The Dome is a large megapolis. In the City Centre there are high skyscrapers, connected on multiple levels. At the centre there is a large Colosseum. The city is busy with a mixture of well-wishers and those who think that the world would be better off if they kept the gates sealed. Closer to the edge of the Dome the high rise buildings taper because many people do not wish to go near the edge because they fear what lies beyond.
She looked up at the sky beyond the Dome. It was dark red and thick like a cosy blanket. Sparks of golden lightning crossed through the clouds. It was raining. The droplets fell like emeralds and trickled down the Dome edge in green stripes.
There were originally 8 gates to the Dome. The Founders had sealed the gates during The Great Storm that occurred shortly after they built the Dome. Only the West Gate is open today. The Explorers' Guild opened it after much debate and effort. A small crowd waits for Amelia at the gates. She poses for a few photographs, then makes her way through the crowd to the Explorers' Hub. A minor rivalry exists between Amelia and the other explorers-in-training, who weren't selected for this mission, but their exchanges are polite. Amelia listens to a few speeches and says goodbye to her friends at the Guild. With a last wave, she boards her vehicle, the Explorer One, and enters the airlock, ready for an adventure.
