Madame Veehn's Bizarre Bazaar and Quirky Circus
A travelling circus accompanied by vendors of curiosities and oddities.
Madame Veehn's circus is well-known and generally well-received by the people of Westmark. Unlike some competitors, Madame Veehn does not tolerate theivery or blatant criminality of any kind from her employees though she will rush to their rescue and defense in the case of problems or misunderstandings otherwise. As such, her group has developed a reputation for quality perfomances and performers on every level. It is also known that mostly harmless but very odd things tend to happen while they are in town, such as pumpkins harvested during their stay being filled with honey, various villagers swearing their animals have begun talking to them, snow falling during midsummer or trees glowing and exchanging places in the night.
Madame Veehn grew up working as a labourer in a circus before climbing the ranks, and so her performers all work alongside her own labourers even for the heavy-lifting such as installation and dismantling as long as they're able. Her support staff includes a number of small children, orphaned or abandoned, that have been picked up on the road. They are required to work in exchange for being cared for by more or less everyone in the circus but they are free to leave anytime they wish. Those who remain, do so by choice and they are neither mistreated nor overworked, indeed many find more of a family amongst the performers and other adult workers than they've ever known. Madame Veehn insists that any child in need, no matter the circumstances, be taken in and fed if they wish it and so they are.
The arrival of the troupe is preceeded a week earlier by a trio of criers who remain in the village or town, publicizing the circus of course, and performing impromptu acts, often comical and/or acrobatic. The trio easily draw attention. One is particularly short and squat, one of middling height and stature and the last extremely tall and lanky. And all three of them uncannily resemble huge, walking toads. Fat lips, bulbous eyes, warts and greenish or greyish skin make this to be the case yet they still appear mostly human. They love to notice small children whispering or simply staring, mouth agog as they pass. Laughing, they will begin to "croak" in harmony or smile and wave in unison, flashing slightly webbed fingers.
Once installed, the circus remains in place for 5-10 days depending on the size of the town and its surrounding population (longer for larger cities) before moving on. While in place and on the road, a number of guards are employed as the staff includes many vulnerable folk and some of the wares sold are very valuable.
In the past, during hard times, it has been known to venture into some neighboring territories but primarily follows a long, circuit around Westmark, retracing it's steps every 18-24 months.
