Carakan

The Morken family has their family seat in the town of Carakan at the northern end of the tunnel. Morken's Passage. Carakan has become a major trade center for cloth, spices and luxury products. The town sits at the southern end of a wide valley. Home to about 5,000 citizens the population contains a mix of Mountaineers, Southrons and Northrons. The town is well fortified with it's eastern face protected of a deep narrow ravine, a more or less impossible to scale mountain to it's south and strong fortifications including a 20' wall and a ditch 6' deep and 20' wide on the remaining sides. The main streets of the town are paved with cobblestone, while the side streets are hard packed dirt and gravel. The Morken families ancestral castle sits on the eastern side of the town and features the Baron's Great Hall, Barracks, stables and several strongly built towers.

Demographics

Roughly 3,000 of the town's residents are Mountaineers, the rest are more or less equally divided between Southrons and Northrons, with about ten percent of each group being Corgerians.

Defences

Industry & Trade

The town has a number of inns, cartwrights, wheelwrights, saddle and harness makers, and blacksmiths serving the steady flow of mercantile traffic through the town. Prostitutes, thieves and professional gamblers all seem to be over-represented here.

Infrastructure

The town's most important infrastructure is the northern entrance to Morken's passage. The town also features a large, enclosed market hall used by many merchants bringing products from the lands south of the Spine. Three different merchants associations maintain offices in the town.

Architecture

The town has a mixture of stone and wooden structures with most houses standing two or three stories. Roofs tend to be sharply pitched to shed the heavy winter snows.

Geography

The town is at the southern end of a wide valley in the center of the eastern Spine. The valley two it north is dotted with agricultural villages.
