Passage of Morken
This is the money making venture of the Morken family. This noble family employed elemental mages to dig a three-mile long tunnel through the spine as an alternative to the Great North Road. One of the tunnel’s main advantages is it is at a much lower altitude than the Great North Road, which crosses passes as high as 10,000 feet. As a result, the road to the tunnel typically remains open further into the fall and open earlier in the spring. The Morken family has their family seat in the town of Carakan at the northern end of the tunnel. At each end of the tunnel heavily fortified gatehouse complexes control access to the tunnel which is sealed by heavy gates of iron and wood back by portcullises. The Morken’s demand stiff tolls for using tunnel and their main clientele are merchants moving high value cargos through the spine. Carakan has become a major trade center for cloth, spices and luxury products.
