Roven

Roven was an ancient Geit settler who founded the city of Roven between Jotun's North and South Sea. His slaughter of local druids was repaid in kind when they lured him into the Shrikevind's path. Improbably, he survived, and found himself washed ashore with no memories in the far future of the very city he founded. With the help of the party Roven reclaimed his memories and place on the throne to oust his cruel descendants and help the Party and Garund Brigthoof defeat an invasion from the White Lion Armada. He has since aided the Party as a patron, albeit one who is haunted by the crimes of his past.

Founding a City

Roven was born centuries ago among the thrall on Jotun. With most of the South Sea fallen to the Koan Empire, he sought to settle new lands in a channel that connected the North nad South Sea. He funded the settlement of his city by having Geit Chieftains buy "guest rights" which would allow them certain benefits and accomodations when they sailed between the seas.   The one hitch in Roven's plan was that the land he sought to settle was already occupied. White Druids had long used the channel as a refuge of their own, thanks to its centralized location and the presence of ancient standing stones that housed a hearth daemon named Stone Face. As many encounters between indigineous people and greedy settlers tend to, Roven develoepd a fractious relationship with the local druid. He "purchased" land from them in the area, albeit without their knowledge that he would upend the area completely to build his city.

An Indelible Sin

As the settlement grew, fighting between the druids and settlers. With his city increasingly becoming a hinge for both trade and the Koan Empire's expansion into the North Sea, Roven found himself under increasing pressure to deal with the druid problem.   One day he took drastic action by leading his men to slaughter the druid once and for all. They received forewarning of the attack, and tricked Roven into pursuing them directly into the Shrikevind's path.

A New Life

Roven's druid enemies likely believed their trap would kill him, but instead Roven washed up in his own city hundreds of years in the future. Relations between the city dwelling Geit and local druid had not improved since Roven's massacre, with many druid still living on the outskirts of the city as criminals and second class citizens.   Gravely wounded, a descendant of one of Roven's victims--an elderly apothecary named Ora--cane upon him. Rather than extract vengeance she lent him succor. However, she feared what the return of their old enemy would do to relations between their two peoples, so as Roven returned to consciousness she fed him herbs to suppress his memories.   Roven awoke a blank slate with a second chance at life. He married a druid and settled in a hut in druid territory in his own city, living the modest life of a woodcutter named Wilhelm. Ora continued to treat his injuries and feed him his memory-reducing herbs.   In an ironic twist of fate, Wilhelm's connection to the druids found him the victim of harassment by his very own descendants. His great grandchildren had grown cruel and capricious after generations of comfortable living won from Roven's own genocidal acts. Samel, the young ruler of the city, picked fights with Roven and his neighbors on a daily basis, constantly trying to oust them from what little land they had left in the city. However, not knowing his own past, "Whilhelm" remained none the wiser.

Innocence Lost

One day, Ora died from old age and Roven's treatment under her care ceased. Her instructions to her successor to continue his memory suppressants went unheeded, and Roven began to have flashes of his past.   His case attracted the attention of the Information Broker, Clay, who was curious about this supposed survivor of the Shrikevind. Clay's informants had been paying Roven a modest stipend, checking in every now and then to see if any memories of his encounter with the Shrikevind had returned.   As Wilhelm's memories returned, Clay sent the Party to learn what they could. After investigating the town, they discovered the truth of his past. Wilhelm and his wifed begged the Corsairs to let him return to his ignorance rather than slip back into the monster from his past. However, the Clansmoot was in need of allies to defend against the White Lion Armada, and the city needed a leader more inclined to help the Geit than the capricious Samel.   Roven reluctantly agreed to put his simple life aside and try to atone for the crimes of his past by taking control of the city. The druids never gave him the chance to repatriate, as they left as soon as word spread of his return. However, the Roven Clan valiantly supported the Clansmoot during the Battle of the North Sea. He even sent his great grandson Samel to the front line to give him a taste of how the other half lives.
