Prince Roze Matyus

Prince Roze Matyus was a prince of Jeltir, son of King Himnerith Matyus and his third wife Metylda, now known for his campaign to usurp the throne from his half-brother King Stallo. He was husband of Lady Lark Orwell of Tadrani, father of the princelings Beck and Florent Matyus, and brother of Princess Bria and Prince Agamnis.   From his early adolescence Roze was known and admired among the palace staff and nobility of Hemejdd, and was a capable swordsman and ardent defender of the peace. The basis of his campaign against Stallo was multifold: he cast doubt on the nature of the death of Stallo's elder brother, the crown prince Arden, whose sudden passing had paved the way for Stallo's kingship, as well as the legitimacy of Stallo's birthright in the first place. It was whispered that he did not truly believe the gossip that Stallo was not Himnerith's true son, and simply used this rumor to give greater weight to his claim. He also highlighted Stallo's more flaccid nature inviting challengers, which indeed it had in the first few years of his rule. Roze's position attracted a fair amount of support across Alustria, including the approval of the peasantry, to whom his mother Metylda was much beloved. It rose to the point of civil war, with multiple skirmishes across the region, and occasionally beyond, taking place over the course of a few months.   Roze's entourage was approached by a company headed by his uncle Prince Feletheus Matyus in early October of 899. Feletheus asked to parley, and Roze acquiesced. They were seen by many on both sides, and Roze seemed to become agitated during their discussion, to the point of challenging Feletheus to a duel. There was no interference from their men and Roze was struck down, dying of his wounds within the hour. This effectively ended the conflict, though Roze's mother Metylda professed that such a duel was unlikely to have been proposed by Roze without extenuating circumstances, and Stallo's rule was fraught with rebellion ever after.
