Besnik Haxhi
Mukarrib Besnik Haxhi
Besnik Haxhi is the Mukarrib of Andros Island and the oldest and longest serving mukarrib in the entire Bahami Federation. He was born one of thirteen male children of the island's previous mukarrib and he was granted the same education and opportunities as the rest, but at first did not seem to ascend above the pack. Unlike his brothers, he took a shine to warfare and became a student of the most feared corsair of Andros at the time. His education expanded to all sorts of material warfare, and he became an active participant in raids against Jakonian shipping.
Besnik truly came into his own however, with the Battle of Freeport in 963, when after captaining his own ship for four years, he became a key component of the unified assault by the Bahamis upon the island against the Jakonians. During the course of the battle, his father was slain by a Jakonian cannon that wrecked the pride of Andros. Besnik rallied the forces of Andros into a final push against the Jakonian regiments, shattering them at last in the fight. The battle ended, all of the islands had heard of the valor and skill of Besnik, and his brothers stepped aside to allow him the honor of being Andros' new mukarrib. Even the djinn of Andros came forward to offer both condolences and congratulations.
The role Besnik played in the final liberation of the Bahami Federation was not unnoticed, and despite the peace that formed, he remained one of those agitating the most for warfare against the Jakonians to continue. In spite of the new treaty and responsibilities he obtained as mukarrib, Besnik lead dozens of corsair raids against the Jakonian coastline over the next twenty years. Eventually, he sustained a severe injury in a naval battle against Jakonian marines, and was forced to retire to his palace following that particular defeat. Chastened by his loss, Besnik turned towards managing affairs on the home front, and cultivated a vast harem of slaves and willing Bahami servants. Over the next thirty years in "retirement" he fathered over forty children with over a dozen different mothers.
Although Besnik ordered more and more raids against the Jakonians, the corsair losses became somewhat unsustainable, and in 1016, he called for a temporary halt to the raiding, after the death of one of his sons in battle. He has since turned towards managing the family, helping to keep his children in line with a myriad of bureaucratic and royal postings throughout Andros Island. He has encouraged conflict among his sons to see which is the most deserving of his support and adoration, not to mention the most likely to succeed him upon his death, leading to eight assassinations and dozens of attempts and duels among his children. Since 1036, Besnik has become decreasingly coherent, and its believed that at long last senility has begun to creep in to his life. His sons circle the throne, looking to see who will become the next mukarrib.
