Yinis Bede

Prime Legate Yinis Bede

Yinis Bede is one of the nephews of the Eternal Empress of the Shin Empire. He was born to the Empress' younger sister in the fourth century, and equally blessed with the gift of immortality. In his youth, he was far more interested in luxuries and having a fun time than anything else, and he became well known as a playboy among the women of Novanass. This reputation continued for his first sixty years, as his youthful appearance allowed him to sneak around the city incognito, becoming somewhat of a legend among the prostitutes and single women of the city for decades. During this time he proved a dilettante towards his education, bouncing around through different programs and tutorages rather than committing to a single field of action. Everything changed when he was sent abroad to Losana, as an ambassador to several of the city states resisting the Empire of Jakonia in 454 AF.   Living in Baton in Losana, Yinis continued his carousing ways among the people of the city, enjoying the parties and celebrations they would hold there over the year. He even adopted a handful of their traditions and became widely fluent in the language. For some time he even considered moving to the swampy region permanently, but that changed with the arrival of the Jakonian army. The Shin diplomatic team sent to Baton was allowed to leave the city before the siege began by the attacking Jakonian forces, and they instead embedded within the invaders' forces to observe what happened next. Yinis was horrified at the slaughter that ensued and witnessed those who he had once partied with being put to death by the Jakonians. He was able to save only one woman, bringing her as a "servant" with the Shin delegation back to Novanass, and eventually marrying her.    The barbarity Yinis saw in Losana shaped him for the centuries to come, as he put aside his old ways and embraced a militaristic education, training hard in the Shin legions. He lacked in any sort of inherent skill or talent, but put in the work to become more experienced, leading multiple patrols along the border and proving to be an exceptional officer, with practice and experience. As a Bede, he was granted ample opportunities to gain this experience, despite a handful of tactical mistakes early in his career. He cut his teeth upon fighting dwarf, orc, and goblin raiders in the depths of the Apps Mountains. During his service, he was the most outspoken advocate of any diplomatic and military efforts to contain the power of the Jakonian Empire. Ultimately, he was promoted to become the Prime Legate of the Star Guard, shortly before the outbreak of the Great War.    During the Great War, Yinis took on a mostly administrative role, allowing more talented legates to take command in the field. He continued to oversee defensive operations within the Apps, focusing on preventing raids while the bulk of the army was committed to the south. These fights proved successful, and Yinis was more than willing to heap accolades upon the commanders who successfully defeated the Jakonian armies. Yinis continued to advocate for tough terms on the Jakonians to prevent them from rising to power once more. He also had a soft spot for Losana, and upon its recognition of an independent state, he returned to visit the lands and cities he once knew and loved. What he saw was dramatic changes, as the Jakonians had spent cities squelching the culture and lifestyle Yinis had once enjoyed, and he returned thoughtfully back to his home.   Yinis continued to command the Star Guard with ample skill and experience from his decades of leadership and centuries of practice. Towards the middle of the tenth century, he began a new program of bringing the most talented recruits and officers to Novanass, transferring them from their home legions. Yinis' visits to the rest of the empire have become less and less common, as the Shin withdraw inward, and he has not been seen in public for nearly one hundred years. Officially he is still in command of the Star Guard, and missives and orders with his signature continue to arrive at outposts and armies stationed outside of the central Apps Mountains.
