Brant
Brant
A Nemeli with raven hair (his name means raven, changed from Brarn). Husband to Cadmus, also known as Cade. Brant and Cade have an adopted daughter, Trinny. He is also the biological father of one of Dayza's two children- her son Admus. Brant is gifted with Spirit Magic, Air Magic and Earth Magic affinity of Elemental Magic, and Spatial Magic affinity of Planar Magic for Summoning. Brant is not just knowledgeable and skilled in summoning, he has a strong constitution for the Gift and could be an army unto himself with all of the creatures he can raise (multiple summons is uncommon). He is also proficient with a sword, bow, and whip.
When Brant was born he had a full head of thick, black hair, the fourth of six children. His parents were shepherds with a small farm in the north, near Glensura. From the time he was very small, strange things would happen around him- creature sightings and disturbed surroundings. Planar magic is uncommon in Nemel, and no one in his family was at all familiar with the Summoning aspect of it. As they did not recognize what was happening, his and neighboring families began to think that Brant was cursed or haunted- or both. When he was seven he was sent to live with his uncle in Portalder under the pretense of getting an education, but they really were just frightened of him. Brant's uncle put him to work instead of sending him to school. Once the same odd occurrences and creature sightings began happening in his new home, his uncle made Brant go live in his warehouse in Piertown. Freezing in the warehouse one night, Brant inadvertently summoned a little Salamander who proceeded to burn it down. Fearing further mistreatment from his uncle, Brant took to the streets where Archon Nephele, sensing the a torn hole in the planar fabric, followed the string of magic connecting it to him. Recognizing his powerful gift, she took charge of him and his education, enrolling him in page school at the Academy and tutoring him personally in Summoning.
Brant was never interested in being a knight; in addition to general studies, he took riding lessons and archery with those students, but his main area of martial education was studying magic. Being a late enrollment and from a poor background with no family, he was bullied at school. Being Nephele's ward gave him some cover as her late husband had been a Layrd Commander of the Order of the Waves and whose daughter married the Sovereign's brother, but as she was also a foreigner in an isolationist country, it was just another oddity on the list. Nephele's daughter, Telephasa, also took part in his magical education. He would spend school breaks with the two of them, Layrd Ronan and Cade, as well as the royal family on holidays, as Ronan is the Sovereign's brother. Given his past with family, Brant mostly stays to himself or close to Nephele and Tele. He still managed to develop a crush on Cade, who didn't notice as he was usually too busy getting into trouble (having adventures!) with Prince Diarmuid (Dare).
Cade's indifference to Brant changed after a few years (yr 302) when some little asshole squires were picking on Brant. Cade noticed a nemesis of his, Bricriu, and his lackeys, including Pryderi, going after Brant and was planning to intercede. However, when the older boys knocked Brant down, he summoned a Dullahan, Bode, from the Shadow Plane (and had also partially, and poorly, opened 3 other gates). The trouble makers ran off. Cade and Dare continued on their way to class, but Cade looked at Brant differently from that day on.
The dullahan, Bode, trained Brant with sword and whip, partially due to the bullying indecent, but also just because Bode wants as much time out of the Shadow Plane as possible; it's awful there. As Brant improves, two other dullahan, Hal and Nickson, join them. They succeed at what the Academy could not- making a decent warrior out of him. In addition to the dullahan, Brant frequently summons a Hippogriff, Operit who is also a close personal friend.
A few years after that (yr 309) KRAKEN. Brant sails out to the open ocean with Nephele, Tele, and a whole ship full of Knights Kraken, including rotating squires Cade and Pryderi, for him to summon a Kraken from the Elemental Water Plane for the very first time (the Order of the Waves knights need the ink from the cephalopod variety of kraken in order to cure their Kraken Leather Ocean Armor). In order to confuse the kraken and make it difficult to find and kill Brant, Tele, Nephele, and Brant all summon Undine from the Water Plane at the same time Brant brings the kraken through. The battle is intense, but the creature is brought down. In the midst of fighting, while temporarily blinded by an ink spray, Cade is in danger of a massive tentacle. Brant opens a portal between Cade and the tentacle, closing it and severing the tentacle. Unfortunately, this alerts the kraken to Brant's location, and the creature's means of escape back to its own plane of existence. It launches itself up out of the sea toward where Brant is flying on Operit's back, but Cade repays Brant's favor by using his Time Magic affinity of Planar magic to literally stop time in their immediate area. After loosening his grip to allow his fellow knights/squires to move again, Pryde uses his Ice affinity Elemental magic (water/air hybrid) to turn every cloud in the stormy sky into two giant spears of ice that he impales the creature with to finish it off, and reveal a brilliant, sunny sky. Cade passes out from over exertion and may have drown, but Jorunn saves him for Brant. Brant, once his own strength is regained, stays with Cade for the nearly two days he is unconscious (they don't move at all as it takes time to break down the kraken and heal everyone). When Cade wakes up they finally kiss for the first time. But joy is cut short when pirates are spotted heading toward Warchod. They send two riders on Hippocamp, but they fear the riders won't arrive in time. Brant and Pryde, with a boost from Cade, unison cast Elemental Projection (using Pryde's Ice Projection, with a speed boost from Cade, to reach the ocean floor, Brant uses his Earth Projection to take the message from there all the way to Portalder) to notify Layrd Llyr. Llyr arrives around the same time as the riders at Warchod and scares off the pirates.
Later that year, Nephele learns that her older sister, Danae, has died. When she announces her intentions to attend the funeral, it causes all sorts of drama, but it is decided that Sovereign Farrel will accompany and make the first state visit to Evestria - Ever. Tele, Brant, Cade, and Dare go as well.
Nephele dies in 312 which is heartbreaking for Brant, making him feel like an orphan all over again. But he's pretty much a grownup now, and he still has Cade and Tele and everyone to work through it with.
On the eve of his quest with Prince Dare (314), Cade gifts Brant books on summoning that had belonged to his grandmother as a token of his love.
After Cade and Dare return, bringing Azalee, Ailbhe, Dayza, Iain, and a butt-ton of dragons home with them, Brant and Cade get married.
Brant and Cade agree to father a child for Dayza via Spirit magic. Shortly after, she leaves so that she can have her pregnancy at home in Pelee, as is proper for her. Brant knew it would be hard to have them leave if it took, but he also knew what he was agreeing to. Day has a daughter that is obviously Cade's, so she names her Brandy to honor Brant as well; she brings Brandy to Nemel every year to visit. Two years later Brant helps Day have a second child, this time a boy, Admus, is born in 320.
The same year Admus is born, there is an attack on Oighearloch by a rampaging group of Jotunn who once lived in the area before they were Simulacrumed by the cult. Now that they are trying to return home and everything is different they go a little crazy (it took them six years to get home because they can't handle heat, and they had to figure out a crossing to the island). Brant and friends head up there; there's no diplomatic option- they are literally tearing the town apart. In the battle Cade finds and defends a young girl whose parents had just been killed. While Cade and Niallan are fighting the Jotunn, Niallan turns on Cade. That's when the little girl instinctively uses time magic to freeze time and save Cade. It stalls events long enough for another dragon, Oidhche, to get there and help Cade. They finish the fight together and save the child, who thereafter won't let Cade out of her sight. Brant hears what happened, and starts taking care of the little girl, whose name is Trinny. After making sure she has no family left alive, Brant and Cade adopt Trinny and raise her as their daughter.
They sort of get another child in 327. Dayza, having experienced the difference in treatment men receive in Nemel vs Pelee, decides to send Admus there to receive his education.
