I find the music from the Heroes of Might and Magic soundtracks to be quite inspiring, as well as the Heroes Orchestra, which performs variations of these songs in concerts like this one:   I've also seen some interesting possible character motivations in the lyrics of a handful of songs, mostly by the Indian folk-metal band Bloodywood.
