Session 4 - A Short Trek Up The Coast
General Summary
In the next two enneads, Kray worked as a member of the crew of the Octopus. During his time on shore, he rented a small loft at a farmstead outside of the main part of town with the Priestley family (landlord, wife and 4 children). With the money he was saving as a result of leaving the flophouse, he was able to accumulate a little savings. In addition, he found what looked like a fairly expensive ring inside one of the fish that formed his catch (Kray estimated its value between 10 and 50 pounds). He also acquired some information about the Kracken's Kiss from harbormaster Cedric Wyndhame, who told him that he saw its Captain Renley come ashore with an elven ship's wife, who nevertheless did not accompany him when the ship last left port. During the second ennead, Kray was promoted to supervisor and found a bottle with a note in it (on which more below).
Drazer the Tiny, for his part, did a fairly bad job keeping the ruffians out of the tavern, causing more damage than good. Or rather, he did too good of a job, beating up too many clients, and (inadvertently?) injuring Joycelyn in the process. As a result is now on thin ice with Benny. Drazer looks like he is going to get fired.
The bottle Kray found washed up against the starboard had a note in it, apparently from Silmara, saying that she was taken prisoner/ kidnapped on a boat. Drazer and Kray then went to to track down the last people who would have seen both Silmara and Bork. They went back to the harbormaster, and asked about any ships leaving, but all were vessels that regularly made Saltmarsh their port of call, but two stood out - the Walrus, and the Kestrel. The harbormaster informed them that they may want to look into who else was interested in the house that Silmara was going to inherit.
They then spoke to Constable Will Stoutly of the City Watch. Stoutly confirmed what Bartholomew Brocksby told them earlier - that the deed of the house was requisitioned by the council to be viewed per Silmara’s request (??). Stoutly said that he was not a superstitious man, and thought that the most likely reason for the disappearances had something to do with the deed to the mansion, though he was puzzled about why anyone would want it. For that reason, he suggested a second theory - the Hellmont Mansion is cursed, and the curse affects anyone connected to it. For a long time, people in town have spoken of strange lights and groaing coming at night. The curse seems to date back to the builder - an alchemist.
Drazer and Kray decided to go to investigate the mansion. It was not in the greatest shape, with the roof caved in in spots, and retaining wall starting to crumble. While scouting around the house, a large snake slithered out of the well, and attacked. After Kray stabbed it with his rapier, Drazer cut it in half. Taking it as a prize, Kray and Drazer headed back to town to cook their snake, and skin it, so Kray can fashion a snake skin belt. The went back to Kray's loft to roast the snake, to regroup, and to seek more help so they can return and give the mansion a more thorough search.
