Baron
The position of Baron is a newly created rank that sits between the Dukes and Duchesses and the Lords and Ladies of holdings, designed to assist in the governing of particularly large or complex duchies.
The rank was created in 447KS, primarily in response to a growing divide in The Skanler Duchy between the needs of House Skanler, House Greydall and House Peake in The Witwell Mountains and House Conklyn, House Fallder, House Rebane and House Ollyn in the foothills. In 446KS this problem came to a head at a Tourney held at The Ilves when a controversial final joust between ser Kiara Jast and ser Chrestan Stele stoked tensions and, if not for the intervention of Duchess Jaenis Skanler, Duke Allon Southbay and ser Carreth Conklyn, might have turned violent. In the months following the Tourney Duke Allon concieved the new rank and then advocated to his fellow Duchal Houses and King Tyon I Cray for its creation.
Initially two Barony titles were created: Baron of the Houses of the Foothills in the Skanler Duchy, and Baron of the Houses East of the Rivers, to lighten some of the administrative burden on House Hayford of Haycastle.
A Baron forms their own Council with similar powers and responsibilities to a Duchal Council. Their Council has two proxies - one to their actual Duchal Council and the other to The Royal Council.
