The Kingdom of Somercrag

More than four centuries ago the petty kingdoms that filled the land between The Witwell Mountains in the North and West, The Mirror Sea in the East and The Great Grinding in the South were unified under the banner of Soren Somercrag, the first King of Somercrag. The Kingdom is divided into five Duchies, each roughly equating to a period of King Soren's campaign of subjugation, and each ruled by a Duchal House that has its roots in that bloody history, from House Hayford being the first house to bend the knee to the new king, to House Skanler's eventual surrender at the end of The Year of Blood. The end of this great war, referred to as 'The Unification', marks the beginning of the Somercragian calendar, with the years being counted from King Soren's formal coronation in Bayglen by his Dukes and Duchesses at a great ceremony in mid-winter.   From that day until the Sixteenth day of November in the year Four-Hundred and Forty-One KS the descendants of House Somercrag of Bayglen ruled the country named for them. On that day ser Tyon Cray then the Lord of Baremaw, brought to a close several months of turmoil and warfare that had stricken the country, killing Queen Malina Somercrag and claiming the throne for his own.   King Tyon I Cray was crowned at the turning of the year, exactly Four-Hundred and Forty-Two years after King Soren, in a ceremony by his six Dukes and Duchesses. In the short time since his ascension to the throne the kingdom has flourished, with many changes for the better both for the kingdom and its neighbours.

The Irogonie Aggression

The borders of Somercrag's lands kept it isolated for many years. Between the difficulty in traversing The Witwell Mountains to the North and West, the windlessness of The Mirror Sea preventing sailing to the East and the frozen expanse of The Great Grinding stretching to the South, contact with other lands was rare. Add to this that their nearest neighbours, until Irogonie's expansion along the continent's East coast, were The Swamps of Baycotte, who to this day have never managed to support any kind of organised regime.   However, in the year Four-Hundred and Forty, this changed. In response to sudden, aggressive expansion by the neighbouring kingdom of Irogonie into lands previously held by the Lamas Plainsfolk, House Somercrag called its vassals to war outside its borders for the first time. In September of that year ser Sola Somercrag, the heir to the throne, slew the Irogonian Prince Lur Lighthelm at The Battle of Starfield, the last in a series of decisive defeats for the Irogonie forces. The Irogonie army surrendered immediately, and signed a peace in which they ceded a great deal of land both to the Somercrag forces and to the Plainsfolk.   When the Kingdom of Somercrag was restructured at the beginning of King Tyon I Cray's reign, the occupied formerly Irogonie lands were formed into a sixth Duchy, under House Foxworth of Fairstrand.
