Yrrch Species in Greland | World Anvil

Yrrch

The Yrrch are a species of large humanoids originating from The Continent of Amoth but now also found throughout The Continents of Igend and Atux.

The average Yrrch stands tall enough to meet the eye of a rider on a horse, though with their hunched posture it is likely they would be as much as half as tall again if they were to stand straight. Their arms are longer than human proportions, and it is common to see them using their forelimbs as well as their powerful legs when running. Their hands are large enough to comfortably enclose a human head as a human might hold the egg of a small bird, and strong enough to crush them with comparable ease with little concern for even the strongest plate armour.

They are an inherently physical species, their large stride and four-limbed gait makes them deceptively fast, especially over short distances, and they are also adept climbers.

Yrrch do not have a strongly developed sense of self, instead they experience a sort of communal identity. To the Yrrch, one Yrrch literally is every Yrrch. Every Yrrch prioritises the pursuit of collective good over anything else, especially themselves. When speaking amongst themselves, the Yrrch speak in plural first person, eg "We did x" rather than "I did x", because their experiences are part of the collective experience of the Yrrch. The Yrrch do not have individual names for themselves or each other.

The Yrrch have a deep distrust of outsiders' attempts to name them. They will begrudgingly answer to titles related to their role - Captain if they are commanding a ship, for example, but would prefer to simply be called Yrrch. When speaking with outsiders they will refer to themselves in the third person - "This one", or to each other in a similar fashion - "That one", "Those ones", etc.

It is assumed that the Yrrchs' reaction to names, as well as their distrust of both the written word and of complex imagery is a reaction to humanity's Anthropomorphism.

These difficulties aside, the Yrrch have adapted to the presence of the humans that they share the continents with relatively easily, with their selfless nature allowing them to integrate well with various aspects of human society, while their intimidating physical presence and the immediacy with which they come to one another's defence has prevented them from being exploited. They have no particular desire to engage in the power struggles that are common to human societies or to pursue fortune or luxury. They simply work alongside humans when such work is beneficial to the Yrrch, and refuse when it is not.

Some Yrrch have been known to enter into longer term arrangements with humans, acting as bodyguards or fulfilling other duties, often for their entire lifetime and with little contact with other Yrrch - some even live out the remainder of their days without meeting another of their species. The reasons for this can be many and varied, but ultimately will be motivated by the good of the Yrrch as a whole.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Yrrch originated in The Continent of Amoth and have spread to the neighbouring continents of Igend and Atux.

Average Intelligence

Although they do not often show it to outsiders, the Yrrch are a highly intelligent species, in some areas equalling or exceeding human intellect. They are possibly hindered by their refusal to engage with the written word or complex imagery, leaving them reliant on oral history and direct tutelage for education.

The Yrrch are particularly adept at puzzle-solving and tool use, though they will often prefer to create a bespoke tool for a task at hand and then discard it once its immediate need has passed. They can often fashion tools to overcome the problems inherent in their large size, however they have no patience for finely crafted items.
