Ehlonna of the Forest (eh-LOHN-nah)

Intermediate Powers

(of the Forests), NG intermediate goddess of Forests, Woodlands, Flora and Fauna, and Fertility

Ehlonna of the Forests is said to be the patroness of all good folk, elven, human, or otherwise, who dwell in woodlands and love such surroundings. She is likewise the deity of those who hunt, fish, and otherwise gain their livelihood from the forests. She is thus worshipped by rangers, foresters, trappers, hunters, woodcutters, etc. More females than males serve Ehlonna.

It is possible for Ehlonna to take either of two forms, a human or an elven female. In human form, Ehlonna will have either chestnut or black hair, while in elven form her tresses will be pale golden or coppery gold. Her eyes are either startling blue or violet, and her complexion is most clear and fair. Her garments range from those of a huntsman or ranger to those of an elven princess.

Ehlonna carries a longbow which always hits its target. She uses arrows of slaying for many woodland creatures — bears, stags, etc. She fights with a magical longsword and a magical dagger, using both at once, often defending with the sword and striking with the dagger.

In human form Ehlonna has special powers over horses, while in elven form she can command unicorns. Her high whistle can call either from as far away as a league. Either sort of creature gladly serves as a mount for her.

She has the attributes and powers typical of a deity of lesser stature. Ehlonna is personally served by a planetar.

Brownies, elves, gnomes, and halflings are especially attuned to this deity. If Ehlonna requests service, it is very likely that such races will aid her in any manner she asks. She often travels among these folk. Her clerics are excellent trackers, and able to befriend animals.

The worship of Ehlonna is centered in the area from the Wild Coast to the Ulek fiefs, from the Kron Hills to the sea. Her clerics wear pale green robes. Temples of Ehlonna are always in sylvan settings, although small shrines are occasionally located in villages. Services of worship involve wooden and horn vessels, various herbs, and the playing of pipes and flutes.

Ehlonna (eh-LOHN-nah) is a very old goddess. She combats those who would harm or despoil the forest of its resources and beauty. Shown as either a dark-haired human woman or a golden-haired elf maid (in which form she is known to many as Ehlenestra), she is served by Novelee, a planetar whose heart is so pure it makes unicorns weep. She has a hostile rivalry with Obad-Hai, but is friendly with the elven gods and most good-aligned deities. Her symbol is the unicorn.

The woodlands are a beautiful place full of life. The secrets of the forests should be learned and taught so that people can live in harmony with nature. Those who would harm or exploit the woodlands must be driven out or destroyed. The plants and animals of the forest are things that nature gives as gifts, not things to be stolen.

Most of Ehlonna's clergy are female, whether human, elven, or fey. They live in the forests, are friendly with rangers and druids, and watch for encroaching nonhumans, hunters, and loggers. They educate those who wish to live in harmony with the forest, just as the animals do. They are gentle in their first warning to those who would harm the forest and ruthless in stopping those who persist. They travel to spread their teachings or to protect a forest in danger.

Domains Animal, Good, Plant, Sun; Weapons longbow(m), longsword(m)

Ehlonna has many aspects: huntress, ranger, woman of the woods, protector of elves and half elves, fertility goddess. She is concerned with all aspects of woodland life including the protection of good humans and demihumans, especially (half) elves. She is depicted as a young, lovely female (human, elven, or half-elven, choosing which form she wills). In any form, she is recognizable by her startlingly deep blue-violet eyes and a very clear and fair complexion.

Ehlonna is kind and benevolent, but sternly opposes evil humanoids and marauders who despoil woodlands. Her faith is strong among the Highfolk (where she is the most widely revered Power), wood elves in general (especially in Ulek, Celene, and the Suss/Welkwood/Gnarley forests), and in many scattered woodland communities. Services of worship include simple repasts (often of uncooked, "natural" foods gath ered in the woodlands), drinking of wine, and the playing of flutes, pipes, and lyres. If a bard is at hand to entertain, so much the better.

Ehlonna's Priests

Ehlonna's priests are fine woodsmen, with males and females equally represented and regarded within loose hierarchies. They are skilled hunters and woodland spies, and work to protect woodlands against evil.

Ehlonna’s clerics wear pale green robes, and choose one species of plant as their special ward. The cleric need not fanatically protect individual plants from all harm, but must see to it that the species as a whole flourishes, and that common folk respect it for any beneficial properties it might have. Most clerics carry a supply of seeds with them as they travel, planting them where appropriate to insure the species’ survival.

All clerics of Ehlonna track as if they were rangers at a level of ability equal to their clerical level. Beginning at 5th level they can cast one animal friendship spell per day; the spell is cast at the cleric’s level, and does not count against the cleric’s spell maximum.

Ehlonna appears as a human or elven female. In her human guise she has either chestnut or black hair; as an elf her tresses are golden-pale or coppery gold. In either form, her eyes are startling blue or soft violet, and her skin is clear and fair. Her garb varies, ranging from the service- able clothing of a forester or ranger to the delicate gown of an elven princess.

In human form, Ehlonna can summon and command horses, while in elven form she has power over unicorns. She can summon either from as far away as three miles. Summoned creatures willingly serve as mounts and will perform any task given them to the best of their abilities. Elves, brownies, gnomes, and halflings are especially attuned to Ehlonna- if she requests a service from any good or neutral member of these races it is 90% likely that her request will be granted, no matter what is required.

Ehlonna’s most common avatar is struck only by weapons of + 1 or better enchantment, and has the abilities of a 10th level ranger.

Ehlonna’s avatar always wears iron bracers that bestow an armor class of zero and grant a + 2 to all saving throws. In addition, she carries a long bow and 40 arrows, a long sword, and a dagger. The bow never misses its target, even when fired at maximum range (21”). Half the arrows are arrows of slaying for various evil woodland animals and creatures. The remainder are arrows +3. The long sword is a defender +6, and the dagger is +4.

This spell makes the target nearly invisible in natural surroundings and almost totally silent, as if he or she were wearing cloak and boots of elvenkind. Furthermore, the recipient’s scent is almost completely masked. The dweomer makes a stationary recipient undetectable by non-magical means at any range over 30 feet. Movement doesn’t negate the spell; it only makes non-magical detection possible. The spell ends when its duration expires or whenever the recipient attacks. The material components are Ehlonna’s unicorn horn symbol and a piece of dried cha- meleon skin.
