Azilatzi Wastes

The Azilatzi Wastes are a land tainted by Ederstone, which rained in massive meteors two thousand years ago. The surrounding lands were reclaimed by states and armies long ago, but Azilatzi has survived and grown more hostile over the centuries.    A few communities cling to the safer corners of the Azilatzi wastes, but most have retreated into the mountains to join the Federation of Korvakal.

Geography

The Azilatzi Wastes are 280 miles across and 300 miles long. Its borders are defined by the Ro-Varasan Kingdoms to the North, the Rukohst Wastes to the West, and the lands of Korvakal and Gatrev to the East and South.   There are two centers of Ederstone radiation: the Forlorn Gate and the Howling Abyss of Anahara.    The Howling Abyss of Anahara is a massive chasm, with an Ederstone meteor somewhere in its depths. The canyon seems to breath, and its roaring breaths can be heard for miles. Monsters crawl from its depths and from pits in the surrounding area, suggesting some unexplored underground complex.   Surrounding the Howling Abyss is the Azilaltzi Forest, a foreboding subtropical forest filled with horrible critters. The Azilaltzi forest is unique among Ederstone wastes in that it actually seems to actually move with some level of intent or organization. The enthralled Starspawn are unusually organized and well armed, the monsters seem to cooperate in attacking outside targets, and semi-intelligent monsters are not unheard of. Everything here seems unusually well connected; trees, rocks, even mountains seem to link together here into superorganisms. Psychic "sirens" that live here have been known to compel organisms to them and return them very differently. This whole trend towards cooperation is fairly recent, but dramatic.    The Ragged Path to the West is a rocky area of shrubland and grassy mountain valleys. It is dangerous and the rock can suddenly collapse into subterranean tunnels, but it is a break from the hyper-aggression of the forest.   Near the Ragged Path and the woods is the Ice-Spine, a series of sharp peaks that monsters and mortals alike struggle to climb. Supposedly inhabited by creatures made of ice, but they seem to mind their own business.    The Swarming Valleys to the North of the Forest are less united that the Azilaltzi forest, but are synchronized in  their own way. Large mono-cultures of swarming, rapidly reproducing organisms fight with each other and anyone who enters. New swarms will sometimes replace the old, making the region an endlessly self-consuming realm of over-abundance.    The Nest to the far North is the worst of all worlds: a series of fused, synchronized swarms attached to a massive beast and a troupe of Kivishta cultists and enthralled Starspawn. This force wandered out of the main Ederstone waste, carved a path through the Ro-Varasan kingdoms, and then just settled down in a new corner. They have little to no Ederstone to make new life, but they have still been multiplying in their corner. Thankfully for everyone else, they haven't shown any interest to replicate their initial invasion and are mostly just sticking to their new home.    Over to the West, the Dovotek Mountains, also known as the Crawling Peaks. The Dovoteks are very much infested with monsters particularly well adapted to mountain life, and are generally the worst mountain-monsters you're going to find South of the infamous Rurateg Mountains (far to the North).   The Forlorn Gate sits at the heart of the Dovoteks. The meteor there struck a mountain peak, and those who have visited the summit have reported a shimmering gateway leading into mountain. No confirmed cases of people going through the gate and back again exist.
