The Heartstone Mountains
Originally called the Western Reaches due to its location on the western border of the Kingdom of Merboitha, this grand expanse of mountains gains it's nickname from one of its native species, the Boitha. When drawing up her initial drafts of the Continental Map, the expert cartographer Azra remarked in her notes that the continent reminded her of the large squirrel-like creature, and that this range of mountains was suitably placed to be its mane. Upon seeing these notes, one of her students took it quite literally, calling the mountain range 'The Boitha's Mane' in an early rendition of the map, a nickname that quickly stuck to the mountains.
However, in the year 1743 of the Second Age, King Arrumund of Merboitha renamed the mountain range at the end of the Battle of the Heartstone, the final battle of the War of the Million Tears between the Orcs of Zor and the Kingdom of Merboitha. The new name was in honour of all the soldiers that had died on the slopes of the many mountains, defending Merboitha's western borders.
Geography
This mountain range is harsh and rocky. Characterized by incredibly jagged, snow capped peaks, most of this mountain range is impassible by the general populace of the continent. To the north of the mountain range is Clea's Bay, and to the south is the Pass of Many Mounds, a hilly expanse of plains with a single winding road.
On the eastern foot of the mountains, surrounding the 4 peaks of Morrowgale's Fallen, is the Forest of Duunir, a haunted forest that few are brave enough to venture into.
