Legio IX Gemina
Legio IX Gemina serves as a specialized, defensive force within the Atreshian Empire. Unique in its composition, it is one of the Empire's only legions almost exclusively comprised of those of short stature, such as Dwarves, Halflings, and Gnomes. Leading this extraordinary unit is Legate Kromgnir Grudgebearer, the first Dwarf and second non-human to ever hold the esteemed rank of Legate.
A hero of the demonic invasion of 1373 in the Second Age, Grudgebearer was bestowed this honor in recognition of his valor and leadership.
Legio IX Gemina stands as a testament to the Empire's resilience and adaptability. Formed in the year 1 of the Third Age, it replaced the annihilated Legio IX Astra. The legion underwent intensive training for a year before taking its position alongside Legio III Draconis, guarding the Empire's eastern borders from raids originating in the lands of Black Tooth.
Currently stationed in Ironforge, the capital of the Dwarven province within the Atreshian Empire, the legion frequently undertakes the construction of fortifications and siege engines when deployed.
The unit's total strength consists of 5,000 legionaries, 300 officers, 120 cavalrymen, 1,500 servants and non-combatants, and 2,000 pack animals. Its unique racial makeup offers a diverse range of skills and combat techniques, making it an effective and hard-to-predict combat unit.
The vexillum of Legio IX Gemina features a white mountain with a rising sun set against a purple backdrop. Above this image, the designation "Leg. IX" is displayed, while the word "Gemina" is inscribed below. This emblem mirrors its twin legion, Legio X, whose emblem depicts an upside-down mountain with a rising moon. Together, they form a complementary set, embodying the unity and cooperation between the two units.
