Warren, the Chummer
Baron Warren (a.k.a. the Chummer)
Warren was the first baron to build a haseti and gain dominance over the inhabitants of the Snow Rock Isles. He began his rise to power by congregating his family and friends, though his band of savages grew steadily according to legend. He had his men build boats larger than had ever been possible in the past. This started with longboats, allowing his entire haseti to travel the Isles, pillaging settlements to send a message. After gaining more control over the land, he would have his haseti, slaves, and citizens build multi-deck galleys for him. The lack of metal gave their vessels a shorter lifespan than one could expect today (and likely smaller), but they would be no less daunting in the era.
Warren's namesake comes from the methods he used to pillage people. Many fishermen of his time would use meat waste and collect it in buckets. They would throw this chum into their nets in hopes of attracting more fish. Warren took the method further and brought with it an aspect of terror. Legends say that those who disobeyed his rule and refused to pay protection money were slaughtered. He would begin with the disabled. He would proceed to have their bodies torn and shredded beyond recognition. He threw these remains in the waters of anyone who disobeyed twice. The amounts of blood and gore often attracted large predators, leading to the deaths of most people in the water at the time; with time, the chumming would eliminate the fisher's food population. The validity of this is subject to question today, but any inhabitants of the isles will swear by the legend.
Death
The Chummer's death occurred during "Warren's voyage against The Prisonkeep," a Snow Rock myth in which the first haseti road into he distant storms of the Orphi Gap to slay the infamous "Prisonkeep." Supposedly, storms and flooding had grown so vigorous that egress from the isles became a necessity, but the ever-raging storms in the gap combined with the Prisonkeep's watch over any who tried to leave made exit impossible. While the Chummer would gladly let the folk beneath him die, he knew that no subjects meant no food. To buy their loyalties, he swore to take his three ships out to sea and slay the Prisonkeep. Two of the three ships fell to the storm, but Warren refused to let his men return home. By the end of the mission, the beast they sought to slay was presumed dead and the crew returned to the isles, but not before butchering the Chummer. Abbot I would lead the mutiny and eventually proclaimed himself Baron of the haseti. His death is estimated to have happened in the year 94 MN, but such early dates within the Standard Augury Calendar are mere hypotheticals.Modern Influence
The Chummer is typically regarded as a disgrace by modern humanity. While the "Blood of Warren" is often revered in any family that can claim it, this refers to his grandson, Warren III. However, reverence to the Chummer has increased in recent years, particularly as The Silence left many looking toward mortal legends in the absence of the gods. Most discussion around the Chummer is in the form of allegory or fables. For example, his gruesome tale makes for a popular undead horror story. Alternatively, many choose to point to his savagery as a shortcoming in early civilization that justifies the presence of the church. While his tale of death and voyage can be exciting for a time, most historians and myth researchers prefer the tales of Abbot I, Warren II, and Warren III.Family Tree: the Snow Rock Greats
