Kratian League

Krato is an anarchistic trading community that is settled along the coast of Aux. The Kratians are known as some of the greatest traders in the world as a result of being frequently raided by the Sugazeh Tribes who they avoid conflict with by fleeing in their boats.

Structure

In order to gain trade routes and employees the merchant captains perform services such as patrolling the coasts, repelling raids and giving out free supplies.Captains with good reputations prosper, signing on the best crew and procuring the best trade deals.

This system encompasses every level of Kratian society and as a result, decisions relating to whether or not a law has been broken are often made on the spot based on the word of a reputable member of society. Repercussions are then swiftly carried out by way of mob justice.

History

During the year 220, the people of Montihume were caught in a civil war. Twenty families from either side of the conflict banded together and fled by sea, settling on the coast to the north.

Demography and Population

The population growth of Krato is limited by raids from Sugazeh and a lack of natural resources. Ship captains have the highest survival rate of all citizens of Krato as they are at sea often and are better prepared to survive raids and other dangers. In total there are approximately five million people who call Kato home, and the land feels sparsely populated due to the number of citizens at sea.

Labourers are far more rare than experienced ship captains in Krato and the high demand for experienced sailors is the basis for the power struggle between these captains.

Foreigners are treated well and accepted easily into Kratian society, provided they are willing to work.

Territories

A large section of the eastern Aux coast is controlled by Krato in name but due to frequent incursions by the Sugazeh tribes, the citizens of Krato are often pushed back to the sea. When pressed to answer, Kratian citizens claim Krato consists of aproximately 80,000 km of land with Aldaport marking the northernmost tip of the border and the river outside Nadol Haven marking the southern tip. Inder's Tower is considered to sit upon the border between Krato and Sugazeh.

Kratians exert influence on Cascade at the Tower of Aux, and participare in trade alliances with the Al Renyan Unitary and the Paradigm Technocracy.

Military

As the land-based army of Krato is practically non-existent, historically, any Kratian force that attempts to stand against the Sugaz horde is quickly decimated. Instead, Kratian sailors are equipped with bows and will lay siege to their own villages when they are occupied by Sugaz forces. The invading forces of the Sugaz horde are quick to anger and have been known to mow down the Kratians as they try to reach their boats.

Agriculture & Industry

Krato has decent land for farming but with the constant invasions from the Sugazeh Tribes they are unable to fully utilise this. The few crops grown by the Kratians are predominately local strains of soybeans and corn. The principal trade alliance exists between the Kratians and the Renyan Unitary who posses an excess of food. The Kratians supplement their main diet of fish with meats and grains procured through trade. Green dye is produced in Krato through the combining of other dyes which they import.

Trade & Transport

Central to Kratian survival is its position as the the trade hub between the islands. Kratians have the ships and the skill which ensures their reputation as the primary naval force in Lanmet. Piracy is not unknown amongst the Kratians but trade is often the more profitable persuit.

Kratian merchants purchase trade goods from the Mont Theocracy and sometimes Sugazeh and then sail to Al Renya via Paradian Archipelago. In Al Renya the goods are bartered and the wealth of Cascade is returned.   The Kratian League requires large amounts of lumber to maintain their fleets and logging is a risky business due to the frequency of Sugazeh raids which occur with little warning. Food is the other major import as Al Renya has a readily available surplus and it can be difficult for the Kratians to farm the local land.

Exports from Krato are often rare and instead their economy relies on transporting and facilitating the trade of the wealth of either land. Metal from Sugazeh is bartered for or looted and then sold on to Al Renya or Paradigm, challenging the Bast monopoly of this resource. In Cascade there is a demand for knowledge and goods from Paradigm and captains will sometimes convey these on the long journey back to the homeland.

The safest way to cross the ocean is on a Kratian ship and therefore a decent profit is made through the transport of both goods and people.

Education

Kratians believe in apprenticeships and young people are highly valued because of the low population.

This seems like a very interesting idea. I always love to see trading hubs, they tend to be very interesting places. I'd like to see more detail under the history and education sections (like what kind of apprenticeships, what age they start, etc.). Also, how can it be an anarchy but also a merchant league? Wouldn't that mean the merchants would rule? Or am I misunderstanding?

Interesting, a government under constant assault that takes to the sea to avoid the raids from their enemies. Who move towards trade over increasing their defenses. How much of this leads to relations of protection for transport and aid on terms of trade? It seems like it would be a prudent choice, if not a necessary one.   With a low population and an excess of high skill labor, how much import consists of manpower and forces to fill the ships and to use as men under captains. Does this lead to a preference of native peoples being trained as captains and the imported labor forming an "Lower Class" in this region?

Nice storyline and format. But how can an anarchist-merchant organization exist? Considering that anarchists are generally sowers of discord (or are just troublemakers) how can the organization earn the trust of the people in order to trade with them? Why do people trade with the said merchants if the organization is by nature chaotic or untrustworthy? Overall, good worldbuilding.
