Session 29 - Finding Bearings in Liutovitsa
General Summary
The party waited out the rainstorm for the next day. Afterwards, Ivan called out across the river to the family they had taken a boat trip across before. After hearing the number of people in the party and Pyotr's family, the boatman, Oleg, would only accept a significant payment for the trip.
Various items were discussed, but in the end, Hamal offered one of his bows so that everyone could be carried across. After having done so, the party led Pyotr's family to a city closer by, one that went by the name of Liutovitsa. There, the duty was paid to the city guard, and the party entered to find Holy Week preparations in full swing. They went to Our Lady of Liutovitsa monastery to find refuge.
The hegumen, Terentii, was convinced that the party had information that would be important for him to know, and after learning what had happened in Aleksandrovka and the watermill, he offered the party a trade. They would convince the people to fight against the encroaching Kochmaki, and in return, the church would take care of Pyotr's family. He wanted the newly arrived companions to speak to the town's assembly in two days to make the case for resisting the Kochmaki.
However, after the discussion, Ivan was very upset; Vashti had recommended that Pyotr's family would be traded for the party's assistance in this matter, and Alena, in her haste, had convinced the priest to give them very little time to prepare themselves for this important meeting. The combination meant that the party was once again trapped between a rock and a hard place.
Ivan went to convince the local magistrate Lazar' Andreevich, to hire him to copy their documentation. Vashti met with a rich merchant named Savva who seemed to see through her disguise, and Alena asked the local townsfolk how they felt about the Kochmaki and Prince Dmytro Mstislavovich as well as his voevoda, Vasyl' Mikhalovych, the city's governor. He also told him of a group of foreign merchants called the Sons of the North Wind who, despite their recent arrival in town, were helping to prop up the voevoda with their wealth, and out of self-interest, could potentially offer aid to Kochmak raiders. Although all signs pointed towards a general distrust of the prince, there was nuance to each of these conversations, nuance that was difficult to convey between each other. However, the merchant did agree to meet with Vashti later with her chaperone, Alena.
