The Antiquarian Association descends into the caves exposed by using the Codicil of White . Velynne Harpell agrees to leave two of her Lava companions behind, taking only Hist with her to act as a bodyguard. They travel ever deeper into the ice, encountering Gnulkhin and an Illthyri, Shianti subrace scouting party. The two groups are clearly in conflict, and the party finds copses of both groups.
Early in the caves, the party finds the wreckage of a crashed vessel. The vessel is composed of lightweight wood and broken sails, leading Tripitika to theorize that this was a flying vessel. Aligned with his visions, he shares his belief that Ythryn was once a flying city.
They explore further finding wreckage from Ythryn scattered among the caves. They find and deal with young Iceworm s, finally finding the remaining members of an Illthyri, Shianti subrace expeditionary force. They speak with Yilsebek and he warns them off.
Fearing the return of the Illthyri, Shianti subrace main force, The Antiquarian Association and Velynne Harpell move quickly through the remainder of the caves, encountering Nothic s for the first time, and descend through the darkness into Ythryn itself.
